This is Pride/Heritage Week in NYC, a time to celebrate and reflect on struggles and accomplishments... One of the highlights of the week is Sunday's Parade down 5th Ave. This year there will be 4 Grand Marshals, one being: Oscar Winner, Dustin Lance Black.

Remembering Stonewall, 40 years

Remembering Stonewall, taken from http://www.chiff.com

2009 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in 1969, and a reminder that the Gay Pride Parade was not always such a festive event.

The original purpose of the parade was to commemorate the riots at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay and lesbian bar of the time that became the epicenter for violent protests against the unlawful treatment that gays and lesbians suffered at the hands of the New York City police department.

The Stonewall riots are now considered a major turning point in the Gay Rights movement, and the Gay Pride Parade still goes past the site every year to pay tribute to its significance.

There is also a moment of silence during the Gay Pride Parade, which was adopted in 1986 by organizers as a response to the AIDS crisis, which was at that time a particularly heated issue within the gay and lesbian community.

It's clear that in this economic slowdown, many gay men are having trouble buying the necessities of life, such as shirts. Let's hope that continues throughout the weekend!

It's Pride Weekend in San Francisco as well, where Prop 8 will be a big concern, Joining the parade this year will be West Point graduate Daniel Choi, who will be joined by out 60 of his fellow graduates in a group called Knights Out. It should make for a great parade.

Wishing all of you a Happy Pride Weekend. Remember, you're gay. You like to see hot men, so head to the parade and enjoy!

Gay Pride Sunday

It's clear that in this economic slowdown, many gay men are having trouble buying the necessities of life, such as shirts. Let's hope that continues throughout the weekend!

Here in NYC it's a perfect day for viewing a parade.

The Pride/Heritage Parade usually kicks off with a lesbian group known as the "dikes on bikes", followed by numerous gay/lesbian organizations and groups all marching in support of their cause. Lots of party favors are handed out so don't forget a bag to store them in.

Following the parade there are several parties throughout lower Manhattan.

I'm looking forward to a great Pride Day!

Happy Pride!
