I don't think it was homophobia, either. Someone mentioned Simon Cowell looking supposedly pissed. Well, he went on the Tonight Show weeks ago "predicting" who had it in the bag. Then the show allowed some guest singer to wear a jacket she prominently displayed to the audience saying "Vote Adam Lambert" in front of the other two remaining contestants.

There's your backlash.

I also agree that it wasn't a case of homophobia. In my opinion, those people who voted for Danny last week, simply switched their votes to Kris and I don't believe it had anything to do with Adam's sexuality.

As a musician, I do believe that Adam was the better singer and the better performer. HOWEVER, I also wanted Kris to win.

In my opinion, Adam will have a better career WITHOUT the American Idol contract (which could restrain him) and Kris will have a better career WITH the American Idol contract.

Here is Lady GaGa's version of the outfit:

It's interesting to note the chorus of gay guys here determined that Adam didn't lose because of homophobia. Are you in denial? Adam was clearly the best singer- even on the last night Kris stumbled with his songs. Granted that he got a lot of votes from people who like his kind of performance and kids that think he is cute, but Adam clearly outperformed him. Even Kris thought so. Yet a significant part of America wouldn't vote for him because he is gay. Did you not see the effort being made by the religious groups? Are you so unaware of people who would vote against anyone that they thought was gay? Or does your safe world require you to discount the fact that many people don't like you and they don't like your lifestyle.

It's east to just blame homophobia always. I'm sure it did impact some votes. But the facts are that young people don't care about whether you are gay or not. I think the real issue is that Adam's style was simply not mainstream enough.

Maybe the young people don't but the Red State Christians sure do and I think they are the ones that sealed his win.

pundits weigh in. . .

For Jon Caramanica of the New York Times, "At best, Mr. Allen is a harmless singer — he makes Kenny Loggins look tough. At worst, he’s indefensible, utterly lacking in texture and range and interpretive imagination. His awww-shucks demeanor spills over to his performances, in which his chin jerks violently to the right every time he’s aiming for a big note, as if his mouth is struggling to deliver what his brain is asking for."

However, as Whitney Pastorek of Entertainment Weekly explained, "Adam Lambert was never going to win this show, but I don't think it had anything to do with platform boots or flaming bombast or some vast red state/Mormon/hillbilly/Miss California conspiracy. I think it had more to do with the fact that the sort of people who would be inclined to like Adam Lambert are not as inclined to watch this show as the sort of people who would be inclined to like Kris Allen."

And as Ann Powers of the Los Angeles Times pointed out, "Allen has his undeniable strong points. In terms of the music industry, he cuts a more contemporary figure than Lambert: Many stars now (specifically rock-oriented, male ones) tend to do better when they draw themselves to scale, offering songs that make fans feel warm and connected, not blown away."

The funniest line of the night was when Ryan interviewed the "bikini girl" and said "I was going to ask you what's new, but I can see what's new. . ."

Totally Right--Homophobia Won

It's just not possible to rule out homophobia in Adam's loss. I think that the Red-State "Christian" mouth-breathers who support Rush Limbaugh et al were licking their wounds when Danny Gokey was voted off, and they sure weren't going to let a "theatrical" (gay), screaming (gay), guyliner-wearing (gay), alternative (gay) glam rocker (gay) win THEIR contest. I work with a very nice Christian woman who loved Adam and Danny, but I could tell at the end of the contest that his perceived sexuality was getting to her due to all the endless posturing from Right-wing 'commentators'. After he lost, she said her radio program said that Adam would do OK, "Queen needs a lead singer." This is what is funnelled into the ears of America and this kind of homophobia needs to be stamped out.

Sorry Rick, et al...

Much to the chagrin of Rick & others, this American Idol thread doesn't seem to quite want to die just yet. Not to mention, the other one about the scandal of voting fraud. What?! Oh my. Say it ain't so!

At any rate, Adam will surely come out of this just fine as will Kris. As proof, check out the story below....

I for one, wood LOOOOOVVVVEEEE to see/hear Adam do 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. One of my favorite songs of all time.

Maybe Adam doing some Meatloaf? Probably my favorite album of all time 'Bat of Hell', especially 'You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth'. Wood be great to hear Adam and Allison cover this one.
