It's up against "Desperate Housewives" and didn't get stellar reviews. Anyone watch the season premier of KINGS?

KINGS premiered on NBC last night. It's a modern day re-telling of the biblical story of King David. Christopher Egan plays David Shepherd, destined to be the chosen one.

I might be one of the few who actually enjoyed it. Coop

I have to disagree with the critics...I loved it! I have always been a fan of stories involving alternative timelines, alternative history (i.e. the works of Harry Turtledove), etc...

Half way through it totally hit me that the series is actually based on biblical allegories...David vs. Goliath, the Philistines, etc... I'm fascinated on the modern twist they brought to it and I'm anxious to see how the series plays out!

Kings Has Queens!

Well I'll certainly agree that the David Shepperd character

(get it Sheep Herder - Very Old Testament)

is cute and the current King's son is Gay and also cute.

Just not enough to keep me away from Desperate Housewives!!!

Aside from being a devout agnostic - the problem for me with Bible-based stories is

you always know how they end. In all the movies the networks show at Xmas

- Jesus ALWAYS gets killed . . .

- Otherwise how can you show Judy Garland in Easter Parade Come Spring on TBS!

As side from the snide - the last thing I want to see is anymore Bible-Based anything!

Think how well laws that are justified as Bible-Based work for us . . .

I also watched the premier and sort of liked it. IMO it does not fit with the mass audience appeal necessary for a network series. This series seems more appropriate for the SiFi Channel (soon to be rebranded as SyFy) or HBO. The adaptation of the biblical story is intriguing and it'll be interesting to see just how close they follow the um...original source material storyline. ;)

The ratings were abysmal which does not bode well in the long run so don't expect a renewal at the end of the run. The Live Feed blog stated the premier was "dethroned". http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/03/kings-nbc-premiere-ratings.html

I also find Sebastian Stan who plays gay Prince Jack quite the little hottie. The outing of this character by the king was a neat little twist.

IAN McShane

I have been a BIG FAN of Ian McShane since his British Series about the Antique Dealer/ Detective which has to be 15 Years ago!

His work on DEADWOOD was Phenomenal! He appeared recently in NYC also on stage. As they say this MAN could read a phone book and make it sound fascinating! :D

Same here. McShane is one of those actors who gets better as he ages. I find his acting captivating especially on Deadwood. It seems like now after a 40 year career he's finally an overnight success. Lovejoy was the series you are referring and it premiered 23 years ago.

"Kings" is a must see !!!

I loved "Kings". I can't wait for next week's episode. With the overwhelming dumbing down of television with endless reality shows that I HATE (except the talent oriented American Idol), it's nice to have a drama that is compelling. I plan to watch every week and I strongly recommend the show. Now that we know the King's son is gay, that should make for an interesting story line.

I can't understand why they put up a new and unproven show against something as popular as Desperate Housewives. Wouldn't they get a lot more viewers if they chose a time slot where nothing much else was their competition?

Ian McShane

Arva.".LOVEJOY" that is the Name. It ran for quite awhile on A&E He and the Older guy and the Black Girl were a great threesome! ;)

As far as why it is on Sunday up against the now getting Boring with STUPID Storylines Desp-Wives..NBC Exec's have alot in common with AIG Execs..High Pay NO RESULTS! :D

Kings' pilot free download on iTunes

Kings is not really against Desperate Housewives. The premiere episode was two hours and the second hour went against DH. But going forward it is on at 8PM and DH starts at 9PM. But don't most people have DVRs these days? I have to tape two things at once all the time these days.

Besides if you missed the premiere episode you can download the pilot for free for a limited time on iTunes.

I watched the show and decided to skip Desparate House wife when it went into the second hour, I thought this show was pretty amazing, it's this kind of show that made Cable shows so popular, and now finally network had taken a chances to produced something so different from other shows out there. It's also great they shot this show in NY, use blue screen to show the different cityscape. Watch it, you will get hook, check the 1st show on NBC.com and watch it next week. I hope this show gets renew.

I loved it too. Once I recognized McShane and related him with Deadwood, I just couldn't turn it off. The David Sheppard character is a definite hottie as well as Jack the king's son. Both are the reason I DVR'd the show and I'm glad I did.

Kings--

I missed the first episode, but decided to watch this week. Slightly confusing for me, since I wasn't sure who was who and what was what. Not sure if I'll continue to watch, especially if "Kings" is up against something I prefer more, but I was very impressed with the videography--if that's the right word---absolutely beautiful shots throughout.

Definitely a different approach than the usual pap on televison.

Samai... Had I not seen the original 2 hour episode of KINGS, (which introduced many of the characters) I too would find it confusing. The action/story is moving very fast and sides are quickly being drawn. The coming attractions for next week's episode look interesting as David gets introduced to the night life by the King's jealous and gay son Jack Benjamin.

I am absolutely loving Kings! The combination of the biblical story of David while also being a social political commentary for today is absolutely brilliant! The writers seem fairly gutsy, so I can't wait to see where this show will go!

Cooper I too anxiously await next weeks episode. I wonder if we will ever see the King's son at least approach David. Also, we had the pleasure of a little skin from David at the start of the current episode.

The two hotties aside this series rocks!

Don't count on this series to be around long. According to the Live Feed blog the ratings were down 20% from last week. That's not going to bode well for a long run.

That is disappointing news. However, we are headed toward rerun season so NBC might stick with it even if its not a ratings winner. There is history of other shows that did not start off very well only to become top rated the following season.

Definitely a new twist for an old network!

I found it to be incredibly boring. The only reason for me to watch it is for the eye-candy and even that gets a little repetitive. Couldn't they go skinny dipping, or something?

No Skin On Kings...

The promos for last night's episode of Kings showed Prince Jack taking David Shepherd out on the town to party. Well, the guys go clubbing and we finally get introduced to Jack's gay lover. Not a happy meeting as the Prince is angry about him being at the Club and has him thrown out... Well, this much anticipated night out with the boys turns out to be nothing more than an act of deception on Jack's part by paying one of his men to take a picture of David kissing another women. Reason being, Jack's sister likes David but her parents have other things in store for her. So, of course, she sees the picture and appears hurt... Day time soap is now on Sunday nights.

Perhaps it would have been better to have produced this show for HBO where more sexual action is permitted. Last night's episode really wasn't that good.
