Sorry, but I don't get it. To catch hepatitis from fecal material, the "owner" of the feces must already be infected, right? So how can you infect yourself (not that I want to get anywhere near my own poop, or anyone else's).

OK, I was curious enough about this to ask a friend who is an infectious disease specialist.

 

He says you can definitely contract hepatitis from contact with the fecal material of an infected individual. You cannot contract it from contact with your own feces, because by definition you would already have to be infected for the virus to be present in your excrement.

 

But, while it may be safer to play around with your own poop than with someone else's, it is still definitely not a good idea as you could ingest parasites and other nasties. So there you go.
