West Side Bar

1071 Beaver Hall (at Belmont, between rue de la Gauchetière and boul. René Lévesque West)

Montreal, QC H2Z 1S5

Phone: 514-866-4963

website: http://www.westsidebar.com

Hours: 4PM to 3AM M-F, 7:30PM to 3AM Sa-Su. Friday and Saturday are Ladies' nights.

Refreshments: Full bar, no food.

Admission: No cover, no minimum, but you are expected to buy at least one drink. You can nurse it as long as you like. No coat check.

Facilities: West Side is the only male strip bar that is not in the Village area around Ste-Catherine Est. It is a pleasant place, located in the Downtown financial/business district on Côte du Beaver Hall at Belmont, just at the bend in Beaver Hall and directly across the street from an entrance to the Victoria Square (Square-Victoria) Metro station. Being located where it is, the bar caters a lot (but not only) to patrons from the downtown offices, which is why it opens at 4:00 on weekdays but at 7:00 or 7:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. That also may be why it has a somewhat quieter and more reserved ambience than the strip bars in the Village. After going through the door you go down 5-6 steps into the bar. There is a small-to-medium-sized stage on the right, the bar is on the left and there are tables and chairs between them and around the stage. Straight ahead at the rear wall there is the backroom area, which consists of 6 good-sized 3-walled booths for private dances, each with a soft armless chair for the customer and the usual stool for the dancer. Behind you when you exit the stairs is an open area with a pool table and video games. West Side has some special event nights, like a Pool Tournament on Mondays: you team up with a dancer and play against other teams.

Shows: More or less continuous dancing until about 2:30AM. Dancers take it all off and become fully nude.

Dancers: There are not as many dancers as are usually found at most of the bars in the Village, but the number is adequate. The dancers tend to be like those at Campus or Stock -- mostly "intermediate" between twinks and muscle hunks. In age they appear to be 20's and up.

Private Dances: Private dances ("contact dances") are available in the backroom area (six 3-walled cubicles) at $10/song (Canadian). "Contact" officially means that you can touch the dancers anywhere except in the genital area or the butt. Some of the dancers may be available for off-premises private shows after they finish their shifts. After a private dance in the back is a good time to ask. The Sauna 456 is conveniently located about a block and a half away on rue de la Gauchetière.

Tipping: On-stage tipping is usually not done in Montreal. The dancers will not refuse it, but it might be better to express your appreciation after they have come off stage and are working the room, or after a private dance in the back.

Accessibility: West Side Bar may be difficult for those with limited mobility. As noted above, it is necessary to go down several steps upon entering, and, of course, back up again to leave. Once in the main area of the bar everything is on the same level.

Other Facilities: West Side has an ATM (a private one, not from a bank), a pool table, and video poker on premises.

As of November, 2004 the room has been revamped and the bar moved to the back wall, leaving more space for tables. The stage setup is second only to that at Stock, close to the audience with lots of room for the dancers to strut their stuff. The backroom booths are perhaps a touch less private than those at Campus (something like the ones at Stock without the curtains), but certainly much better than Adonis or Taboo.

West Side’s hours have changed: they now open at 7 pm (and close at 3 am) every day of the week. Ladies’ nights are still Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The easiest way to find it is to take the orange line métro (from Berri-Uqam if you’re in the Village) to the Square Victoria station. Follow the signs containing the words “Beaver Hall” to an exit. When you emerge from that exit, the West Side will be directly across the street from you.

True. At West Side there are only 'several' (about 4-5), and at Campus there is a whole flight and they are indeed steep. Nevertheless, they may present a problem for those with limited mobility. And at Campus there is an elevator.

What elevator?

The last remains of that elevator has NOT worked for several years!

And there does not appear to be any hurry to fix it, unless it has been repaired since last September!
