Hey guys i had an argument with a friend a couple of days ago about this and wondered what the general consenus would be if it happened,he worked in Vice here in NY about 10 years ago and has now since retired he argued that it should stay against the law to which i said that was crap,it would save a lot of time and money if there were legalised brothels and both men and women who wanted to make a living in what is the worlds oldest profession(my argument being that no matter how many sweeps of hustlers, raids of clubs and stings costing lots of taxpayers dollars it aint gonna go away any time soon.)

The basis of his argument was that if this happened it would lead to a different moral climate which i think straight people of a certain age and outlook would be frightened with even though it would apply to both sexes(he knows that i am gay).

My argument basically is that if there was more openness regarding what basically is a natural act whether it be M/F M/M F/F or any combination then life would be better and sex especially between consenting adults of the same sex whether for money or otherwise wouldn't be demonised and the people who make a good living out of denouncing gay people would have the wind taken out of their sails, also dont tell me that there aint no gay people in those organisations, anyway what do you think if you could go into your local Blockbuster and hire the latest Falcon videos or have escort ads in the Sunday NY Times every week or have a floor in your local department store to buy the latest dildo etc and stock up on condoms, lube et al would it be great think the top escorts could advertise on network tv ,anyway i would be interested in hearing what people have to say...

Also dont get me going on the legalisation of drugs;-)

Your posting this on a board where men come to talk about hiring men for sex...er, sorry...I mean for their time...

I think you are preaching to the choir, my friend - I am all for it of course...

Rush --

You might point out to your friend that the U.S. is one of the few remaining countries (outside of the Islamic world) that criminalizes prostitution. In most countries it's legal and in many of those countries it's regulated (i.e., licenses, health checks, the hookers pay taxes and get health/pension benefits in return). This is true even in formerly Victorian England! Of course, this makes vice squad types antsy because they think it would put a lot of them out of business. Actually, it wouldn't, because if it's regulated there still needs to be some enforcement. Issues of pimping, coercion, white slavery, etc., don't go away and require control. Someone also has to ensure licenses/health certificates are current.

In places where there's little or no regulation, you can run into street prostitution situations where the public soliciting gets totally our of hand, so there's also a role for police work there, although it's another argument for regulation, as well. (However, I'd hate to see the cops in Brazil shut down the male hustler cruising areas where the guys stand around flopping their big ole dicks out so you can check out the merchandise! That's as much of a tourist attraction as a trip up Sugar Loaf, for those who are into that kind of fun! Usually, though, this goes on at night in areas that aren't residential, so nobody is bothered.)

I think we're on the same wave length about legalizing drugs. The amount of money wasted trying to stop the unstoppable is insane. What the drug trade has done to the U.S. and to the supplying countries is also obscene. But you're right; that's a subject for a separate rant! :-)

Rod's right. Our prices would drop. More people would probably get into it and take the criminal edge off of it. I admit, I do like the

element of danger. Going to a hotel, wondering if this is guy is going to be a cop. I get a rush off of that.

I kind of like the fact that I make a living doing something that not a whole lot of other people do. I never wanted a nice, safe 9-5 job kind of life. Retail management bored me to tears.

I think we may see increased decriminalization of prostitution, but I believe it will be a very slow local and state level process and I will probably be in the Old Hookers' Home by then.;-)

Hey Tri,

You certainly got my attention. Time to hijack this thread now :-) What's this and can you tell us more?

Have fun!

Rush, I don't think that your run-on sentence is the only thing that got carried away. I celebrate and agree with your opinion here until you get to the part about dildos being available in department stores. I don't think that a lot of people read classified ads who would be offended by an escoriting presense there, but a lot of mothers and children go to department stores. Specaialty shops would be much better in my opinion.

Yes, there would be for a while a lot more people going into prostitution and the fees would fall. But we all know that fees probably should fall a bit now, sorta like we all know that about the stock market from time to time. However, t here are a lot more guys going into escorting right now, from the economy taking a downturn, and prices haven't gone down much. Have they? Once escorting is legalized, perhaps people will realize that there are a lot of mental factors going into making a good hooker, probably as many as there are physical ones. After a lot of the newbies flushed out of the market place, thanks largely to what would be an increased importance of this site, there probably wouldn't be a huge continued surge into it. Not one that we as a community couldn't handle, any way. Do we see many more escorts available in those countries where it is legal now than in our own? And are they charging a lot less than USA escorts? (My impression is that the answer to both questions is no, but I don't pay a lot of practical attention to foreign conditions. I just fantasize about certain foreign men.)

I also urge any of those who feel they are in a position to do so to send handwritten notes to their elected representatives once a month to fight for the introduction and passage of these kinds of bills.

On legalization: I doubt prices wouldcome down much if prostitution were legalized in the U.S (it is legal in Nevada, remember). Prices aren't all that cheap in many places where prostitution is legal. (See Nevada, UK, Holland, Germany as examples.) Not everyone is cut out to do it, there would still be social stigma, etc., which keeps people from flooding into the business. Also, prices are related to local salaries, cost-of-living, etc. People can afford more, and sex workers need to earn more, in first world countries than in third world ones. It's true that legalization would cut down that "thrill of the forbidden" for JeffOH, but it would take a load off of other people's minds!

Brazilian meatracks: They exist in many cities. In most cases you need a car and a local to show you around, because they can be dangerous. If you make a local friend who thinks these are fun, and who has a car, give them a try! A few that I know of can be done on foot, but it could be risky. In Rio, ask a friend with a car to take you to the "Via Apia" downtown. Don't go on foot; it's dangerous. In São Paulo there's a meat rack on streets downtown near the Praça da República involving rua do Arouche as one of the sides of the block. Largely car cruising. In São Paulo there's also similar action in the Parque Trianon area (on av. Paulista across from the art museum) on Alameda Santos between Pamplona and Peixoto Gomide, and also on Dante. In Curitiba, there's the downtown Praça Gen. Osório, and in Porto Alegre there's r. José Bonifácio along one side of Parque Farroupilha (the central park which is also dangerously cruisy at night). Under no circumstances take someone you pick up at any of the meat racks to your hotel. Go to a "motel." If anyone goes, do report back!

I live in Nevada. Although brothel prostitution is legal in some areas of the state, no place has legalized street prostitution. There's not way to register, tax or STD test street prostitutes.

For these and other societal esthetic reasons, loitering is (and I believe always will remain) illegal. As to prices, the brothel prostitutes remain very expensive.

When alcohol was legalized, it reflected the morality of society, not the reverse. There was no change in the moral client of the nation after the end of prohibition. The same, I think, would apply to the end of prostitution prohibition.
