The Taboo dancers appeared in Court on Friday, 8 August.

According to one dancer with whom I spoke, it was a very low key event. Each dancer was asked to stand, give his name, and some number -- possibly a docket number? Each dancer was asked if he was represented by a lawyer. (Apparently no one was.) The judge told them to obtain the services of lawyer (apparently one lawyer to represent all of the dancers) and a future date would be set for arraignment. It sounds like the club may help arrange (if not pay for) a lawyer.

The dancers seem relieved to have this initial court date behind them.

This is good. I have been hoping that the dancers will not have to plead before the club's trial is complete. If the club is cleared, then res ipsa loquitor... the dancers are cleared. You can't be guilty of being found in a "bawdy house" if the club is not found to be one.

The outcome of that trial will certainly add clarity to what the dancers must do.

Agreed! Excellent article! Particularly the following quote:

There's still hope that the famous Quebec permissiveness will prevail, and all freedoms, including the overtly sexual, will be protected.

Let's hope so!! Especially for the dancers who have essentially been dragged through the mud on this one.
