I have three days in London coming up, staying around Victoria Station. I was just looking for recommendations for bars/clubs to visit. Just looking for a few places where someone 42 won't be too much out of place.

Not necessarily looking to pick someone up, just want to visit a couple of friendly bars, where the music is not too overwhelming.

Wish I could help but everywhere I frequented while in London was basically all that you're not looking for. However if you just go to the westend near cherrycross station you'll be sure to find something suitable. If you're planning on hiring anyone get ahold of http://www.choirboys.co.uk Tell Ben that Mike sent you and say hello for me.

Hope you have a great time either way..

Mike ;-)~

There are a gazillion gay places in London -- pick up one of the gay rags and check it out.

The City of Quebec (maybe now called simply Quebec) is right around the corner from the Marble Arch tube stop, steps from Oxford Street. Very friendly to the older type, good for intergenerational meetings. The management has unfortunately been upgrading it, probably looking for a younger, noisier, less thrifty crowd. Nevertheless, you should check it out.

Villa Gianni is worth consideration -- in the past it has been a solid, dependable organization with a decent location near Earl's Court. Nice lads. http://www.villagianni.com/ .

On the nonsexual front -- try London Walks. Inexpensive, fascinating. They have brochures everywhere. Their guides are terrific. Walks of a couple of hours to all day, absolutely worth the time and effort. Some out of town walks too -- Oxford, Salisbury/Stoehenge, Bath.

Enjoy London!

Welcome to London! there is one gay bar near Victoria Station - Just behind the Victoria Palace Theatre where KISS ME KATE is showing. It called THE STAG (Bressenden Place). it is a good "local" with a mixed age clientelle. You can find the gay papers there. On the other side of Victoria is a small street - Churton Street, just off Belgrave road. There are half a dozen good restaurants there, including two "English"(rare in this city!) -Chimes and Grumbles -both are good and not overpriced. From Victoria, the easiest way into the centre -Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, China town and the Gay centre, Old Compton Street is by 24 bus. It passes Westminster Abbey, the houses of parliament and Downing Street on the way, and at £1.00 a ticket, it is cheaper than the tube (£1.60). Victoria is a great place to stay, five minutes walk to Buckingham Palace, and a nice walk through St james Park to Trafalgar Square -if you are feeling fit. The one day travel cards are valid on both the underground and busses, so worth investing in. have a great time. it is a fun city.

1) Copthorne Tara

2) Le Meridien Grosvenor House

3) Millennium Britannia Mayfair

4) Hilton Metropole

if none of the above is recommended, can someone please name a few ?

try staying near Earls Court, lot's of great hotels... probably less expensive than Soho.. and friendly gay, not ghetto gay.

City of Quebec bar is near Selfridges on Oxford Street(nearest underground Marble Arch). Hotels near Soho include the Savoy, the ST.Martins, the Waldorf, No.1 Aldwych. The Strand Palace, The Meridien Piccadilly,The Ambassadors,The Trafalgar ,The Hampshire,The Pastoria, the Hilton Trafalgar.Hotels in Bloomsbury are about fifteen minutes walk away, and the Park Lane hotels mentioned in the earlier post are three tube stops away, but about half an hour's walk. I hope this helps.
