The comments about Rio are amazing. Are there resources on the net to learn more about gay life there? any books? do they have an escort business or do people get together in other ways?

Check out the last couple of month's messages in the forum "Escorts South of the USA" - lots of good information and tips. It sold me.

Books: "Perverts in Paradise" by João Silverio Trevisan. (In spite of the title, a serious sexual history of Brazil from a gay perspective by a brilliant writer.)

"Beyond Carnival" by James N. Green.

See the websites in the threads on Escorts South of the U.S., plus the reviews under Escorts Outside USA, including my semi-world-famous review of Brazilian Saunas.

Dear Friend,

I have just seen your Comments about Rio. May I say How much I enjoyed your reviews about the Saunas in Rio. I wonder if you could help me with the following.

I am flying out to to Buenos Aires Feb 1st to join a Cruise Ship and we arrive in Rio Feb 10th for three days for the Carnival.I know I will not get any fun in the Saunas during this time as they are full of tourists and not Brazilians. However before the ship reaches Rio it calls at Montevideo uruguay, Santo San Paulo, and after the Carnival Buzios and Ilhabela.

Do you happpen to know if there are any Gay Bath houses in the above City's? I am English mid 50's and would like to meet some Gay guys while on this 18 day Holiday.

I hope you do not mind my bothering you. This is my first time to South america. Also how does one get to the Links on South america Mentioned on the Pages.? I am new to this site and only just had a Computer. thank you for you help in this above matters.

Kindest regards

Mac

Dear Mac --

Believe me, you WILL have fun at the saunas during Carnival. The other customers may be out-of-towners, but the rentable guys will be local stars and starlets. There won't be any real conflict with the parades, etc., because the best times for the saunas, if you read the review under "Escorts Outside USA," is from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and the parades don't start until around 9:00 p.m. and go all night long until after sunrise.

To my knowledge, there aren't any bathhouses with boys for rent in any of the cities mentioned except in São Paulo (see the same review for information).

There is a popular bathhouse in Buenos Aires (whose name I don't recall at the moment but will be listed in the local gay magazine and bar guide there) which is just a regular sauna, not one with escorts. For other local gay life, cruise up and down Av. Santa Fe between Callao and Pueyrredón on the sidewalk farthest from the river (or on the right when facing the direction of the traffic) and turn on your gaydar. The cafe "El Olmo" at Santa Fe and Pueyrredon is very gay and you may be able to pick up a gay guide there. There are some guys who seem to be hustling there between, say, 9:00 p.m. and midnight. Outside El Olmo there are usually kids handing out flyers or coupons for the various gay venues. "Contramano, " on Rodriguez Peña a few feet from Santa Fe, is a disco where older men have been known to meet younger men, if you get my drift. Also, very late on Thursday nights (really Friday morning by then) there are usually strippers at a bar called "Gasoil."

In Santos, the gay beach, from what I understand, is between Canals 2 and 3. Also in the adjacent city of São Vicente, at the very far end of the beach (in the direction away from Santos). Búzios and Ilhabela are very small, so there won't be anything there.

For nightlife info in Montevideo you can check the website listed in that section in the "Escorts South of the USA" bulletin board. To go to any of the links mentioned in the reviews or in any of the bulletin board threads, just point your courser at them and double-click on them if they're shown in blue (or some print color other than black) on your screen. That should connect you directly to that site.

Have a wonderful time! I'm sure you will!

I guess people like different things. I love the whole idea of Carnival and the costumes; Carnival for 2 to 3 days, and then the beach and the city for the rest.
