I stayed up very late last night to watch Urbania on HBO (I have the bags under my eyes to prove it). A little weird but very interesting independent movie about a man who copes with the loss of his lover.

Has anyone seen any good "gay" themed movies?

Here are some that I've seen which I enjoyed:

Billy's Big Hollywood Screen Kiss

Queer as Folk (original British version, part I)

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Chasing Amy

Gods and Monsters

Get Real

The Wedding Banquet

These I've heard about but haven't seen yet:

Broken Heart's Club

The Trio (foreign film)

Trick

Finding North

Jeffrey

Let me know what you think of these or in you have any other good suggestions. Thanks.

I agree with regards to Urbania. Very good. The first time I saw it,

I was suprised at the ending.

I also liked Broken Hearts Club. It's great to see a movie about gay people not dealing with AIDS or homophobia. Sometimes, a lighthearted romantic comedy does the trick.

Other suggestions (and seconds):

As it is - a British film about a gorgeous gay boxer and a club promoter

Edge of Seventeen.

Beautiful Thing.

johns

trick.

boys shorts #1.

More about transgender issues than homosexuality, I still highly recommend "La Vie En Rose", a funny and serious film about a little boy (7 or so?) who identifies as a girl. One particularly good scene is a mock wedding he stages with the boy next door.

Broken Heart Club is good, a little syrupy but sometimes sweet is ok. Think I saw Trick but can't remember it. Not a good sign. But Urbania is by far the best of them.

My Own Private Idaho

Not sure how "good" it is, but I enjoyed my Own Private Idaho (or something like that?) with Keeanu Reeves (sp?) and River Phoneix as gay hustlers who get together in more ways than one.

Trick is well worth seeing, if only for scenes of JP Pitoc in a g-string as a go-go boy. :9

It's actually sort of a gay version of a chick flick. Just a sweet little love story with an ending that will leave a smile on your face.

If you're on TLA Video's mailing list, it's frequently available on DVD in the cheap movies heap.

That brings up a point I have often wondered about - is Reeves a card-carrying member? I hear he used to room with River (who was gay) and there is a gentle quality about him that makes me wonder. I find him very sexy so perhaps it is just wishful thinking on my part. Any of you have the scoop?

Seen The SUM OF US starring Russell Crowe, 5-7 yrs younger. Light but good, Maurice still ranks as the best for me, although if you live in NYC, the video shop along Amsterdam Avenue between 82nd or 83rd (I think) has a good collection of gay movies such as Man of the Year, The Priest, It's in the Water, etc. Go check it out.

HEAR YE! HEAR YE!

Hold your horses, drearies, but MTV and Showtime are preparing to launch an all gay channel: TO CATER TO ALL KINDS OF GAYS (That's how I look at it)!. NY Times 1/10/02 has an article on it. It sure will be worth watching once it comes out, they did say it is on cable pay per view SO ONLY THOSE WHO WANT TO WATCH IT MUST SUBSCRIBE!!!

Don’t forget “A Beautiful Thing.” A cute little story about two British teenagers coming out and getting together. There is a scene where they are running through a park at night playing grab ass and ends in a make out session. I’ve seen the movie half a dozen times and it makes me smile every time.

Hooboy should act immediately to license rights to the serialization of this board. Talk about appointment television. From the ridiculous to the sublime to the catty to the paranoid. Petty rivalries exposed to the pay-per-view world. Deep reflection on the important matters of our times interspersed with lots of sex. Frank talk about health concerns, clock-watchers and some people's sanity.

Hey, I'm in.

RE: My Own Private Idaho

River Phoenix was not gay. I am certain of this. Now did he experiment as a teen, possibly. Haven't most boys? Did he have a strong attraction to the same sex, no!

Cheers! Ritchie

Another good one is Postcards. I rented it from blockbuster, always amazed when they have a gay-theme movie and this one was like borderline porn. It was a few years ago but and no longer available at my blockbuster but worth looking for.

I'm a sucker for that kind of movie, and your analysis of it explains why that is a favorite of mine.:)

Among the others on the users "not seen yet list" which I would recommend is "Jeffrey". Clever and touching look at a gay man's coming to terms with "safe sex" and not letting it keep him from enjoying life. The cast is excellent, including Steve Webber in the title role, and Patrick Stewart (Star Trek TNG) as a campy interior decorator whose boyfriend is a dancer in "Cats." Enough said.

Other recommendations:

"Edge of Seventeen" - 17 year old boy comes out, with help of a local lesbian bar owner (Lea Delaria).

"Common Ground" - three stories about being gay in a small town in New England, over about a 40 year period. Stellar cast includes Jason Priestly, Eric Stolz, Steven Webber, Jonathan Taylor-Thomas (as a gay high school swimmer), Harvey Fierstein and Edward Asner. Was a Showtime made-for-cable movie a couple of years ago, and still shown every month or two on one of their three stations. The video is also being released this week at around $15 list. Not on DVD.

And for purchasing gay videos, I suggest you also check out Amazon.Com. They usually beat TLA's prices by quite a bit.

Hmmmm.

Of the movies I listed:

Iron Ladies is a Thai movie with gay Thai characters.

Happy Together and Farewell My Concubine are Chinese movies with gay Chinese characters.

One of the two main characters in The Delta is a gay African-American/Vietnamese man.

East is East is about a South Asian family in Britain; one of the subplots involves a gay son.

What movies with gay characters of color does CraigSF39 like? Midnight Dancers? Bugis Street? Parallel Sons? Stonewall?

Give us some names of films.

Odd, I've never thought of this as a gay-themed movie. BUT it is one of my favorite alltime films. Fight up there with Children of Paradise and Jules and Jim. Aguirre is certainly one of Mr. Kinski's great performances. Wowie zowie!. And I'll never forget that last shot with all of the monkeys on the raft.

I didn't know that there WERE any gay men of color.

I'm not sure, but his favorite actor must be Scatman Cruthers.

I have it on good authority that he plays the final scene in Pink Flamingos (where Devine eats the dog shit) over and over and over andddddd....

Oh, and how could I have forgotten "But I'm A Cheerleader"? This is a really funny spoof of ex-gay ministries. RuPaul (sans drag) plays the supposedly straight counselor working with the boys, and his scenes are especially funny. Mink Stole plays the mother of the cheerleader sent to the camp to make her straight (I have had a soft spot for her since she brought "Taffy" to life in John Waters' "Female Trouble".)

This is definitely a film only for those who enjoy "camp". Even though it tries too hard at times, it is still funny.

Not really gay themed, but certainly filmed with a gay sensibility was The Krays. True story of British east-end gangster brother superstars of the swinging sixties, Ronnie and Reggie Kray (portrayed by Gary and Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet). Ronnie was a puff, as was a good portion of the gang. Filmed in 1990, but I just saw it last night. It's violent as hell, and the brothers' sexuality is not entirely the focus of the film, but is dealt with frankly. It's worth a look.
