Hi! I'm planning a trip to Vancouver this summer, and was hoping for some advice on hotels, particularly as might interest the traveler who is gay and who expects to hire an escort. The three hotels I'm interested so far are the Listel, the Blue Horizon, and the Parkhill hotels. Of those three, the Listel seems to be the highest rated by the Canadian government, but it lists in its website "Secure guest floors for hotel guests only." Does this mean I won't be able to bring in tricks or escorts? I definitely tend to get that problem in Mexico. Are the other two hotels nice? Does one have to be in one of the higher floors for their views, or would, say, the tenth floors be adequate? Do the Blue Horizon and Parkhill both have great views, or does one definitely have better views? Does the Listel have views at all? They don't seem to advertize any views. Well, thanks to any who may be able to provide advice... :-)

They're all located in the (downtown) West End --- a popular gay area.

Wow, I'm a Canadian and I don't even know that the Canadian government rate hotels...:o So where is the website?

My understanding of "secure guest floors" is that only people with keys (often card keys) would have access to the floor where they're staying. What I usually do is to come down on the elevator, meet the escort there and bring him up. Never have any problems.

>I definitely tend to get that problem in Mexico.

I know what you mean and it could also be a problem in some exclsuive hotels in Asia too.

>Are the other two hotels nice?

I have never stayed at the Parkhills and Blue Horizon but Listel is not bad. It's tastefully decorated and located right on Robsons --- very convenient. Good customer service. The size of the room/suite is pretty standard. However, if you're willing to pay similar amounts or perhaps a bit more, I'd highly recommend the Four Seasons, Westin Grand, Hotel Vancouver, Shearton Wall Centre and Sheraton Le Soulie. They're all located in downtown Vancouver and I have very positive experiences with all of them.

Among them, the Sheraton Wall Centre probably has the nicest and most breathtaking (city or mountain) view. Westin Grand (on one side) is not bad. Depending on the hotel, the 10th floor may not be high enough to give you a nice view. Try higher floors (e.g. 20 and up). The Westin Bayshore also has some nice views but it's somewhat farther away.

Good luck in your hotel hunt. Hope this helps. Have a nice trip. There're definitely some top notch escorts in Vancouver, enjoy! :9

As a resident of Vancouver I can assure you that many of our hotels are quite excellent. But in order to give you advice I would have to know your budget - how much do you want to spend on a room, per night?

I really appreciate your help! Anyways, I've found a room at the Listel for US $100, a lower-floor room at the Blue Horizon for US $97, an upper (above 15th) floor room at the Blue Horizon for US $116, and a room at the Parkhill Hotel for US $70. So I would say that my budget would be under US $120. Thanks again! :-)

Thank you for your assistance. A couple of the websites I visited, I think they were Travelocity and Expedia, made mention of the "Canadian government rating." They seem to be a bit more generous than AAA. Of the three hotels I listed, all were AAA 3-diamond, but two were Canadian goverment 4*.

I've already emailed you about hotels, but I forgot to mention the Listel doesn't have views, it's only about 6 stories I think.

As Jt mentioed, you will most likely have to meet your guests in the lobby or by the elevators in the majority of the hotels, after a certain hour. We have a little bit of a homeless issue in Vancouver, so most hotels lock the elevators after 8 pm.

Wall center is great, Sutton Place is great, hotel Vancouver, classic. Westins always consitent.

Well your budget of US$120 equates to almost Can$200. Not quite enough to get a glitzy high profile hotel in the high tourist season.

But there is an alternative I would highly recommend. It is the Sylvia Hotel - try http://www.sylviahotel.com for their site.

It is an older hotel, nicely kept up, and you can get a suite (not just a room) for Can$140.

The really big attraction is the location, directly on the beach at English Bay (the only hotel that can boast this) and one block to the gay neighborhood of Denman Street. It is also only a 5 min. walk to Stanley Park, which is a 1000 acre unspoiled area that is very cruisy, especially at night.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy our city.

RE: street trash?

Last time I went to Vancouver I found a very good deal using Best Western's website, http://www.bestwestern.com. In the winter off-season I got a very good deal on a one-bedroom suite at the BW on Granville Street, with a very nice view of False Creek. As I recall, it came to less than US$100. Actually, I think it was more like US$70. Can't hurt to take a look and see what they have. If that hadn't panned out, the Silvia was also on my list of hotels to try. Have fun, it's a really nice city, even when it's raining!
