I was not aware that Beautiful Thing was originally written for the Stage. I would have liked to seen the live performance.

To answer a few questions that have come up in this thread, as far as I know Beautiful Thing has not been released on DVD. Also, someone asked what network was it on, either Sundance or IFC I do not remember specifically.

Last night a friend and I watched a coming of age double feature, Beautiful Thing and Get Real. I felt both had been well written and acted.

However, Beautiful Thing seemed more realistic to me of the two. I must confess I fell in love with Glen Berry and that might have colored my opinion some. That given Ben Silverstone's (Get Real) performance was more convincing than that of Berry.

Do you guys have any thoughts on these two films? Also, would you suggested any like movies?

Cheers! Ritchie

What channel is Beautiful Thing playing on? I know Get Real is playing on showtime. I thought Get Real was well worth watching BTW.

beautiful thing might seem more real as the script was more polished; i remember seeing it on stage in london about 5 or 6 years ago and often stage productions made into movies have better writing. also, while i enjoyed get real, it is too much of a fairy tale with the handsome school jock being gay. what gay person did not have the fantasy of having sex with the popular, handsome, smart jock. the guys in beautiful thing being ordinary guys should seem real.

Since Beautiful Thing came first, it would have to be my choice. It was almost revolutionary when it came out, and it seemed to set of a bunch of those sorts of coming of age stories. It's a shame it hasn't been released on DVD...or has that finally been remedied? I love the whole film, but the part where they make out in the park and then the dancing scene at the end are my faves.

I must confess to not remembering much about Get Real, but I do remember that I liked it. :-)

As for a list of similar films... You might want to check out the PopcornQ website ( http://www.popcornq.com ) for some ideas. One that springs to mind right away is "Edge of Seventeen". The guy who wrote that film (Todd Stephens) has a new film out called Gypsy '83 which is really excellent. You might also like "Come Undone" which is a French film about boys in love. It's a little hard to follow and very slow-paced, but it's got some pretty hot love scenes in it. There's also the classic "Wild Reeds" which has a very complex and interesting story.

I'm sure there are many others.

Beautiful Thing - I walked out that movie with such joy. It truly

made me happy seeing it, but not very realistic. Sometimes you need a

movie like that.

Get Real - More realistic. Good film not great

Edge of Seventeen - Reminded me of me growing up. Probably more

middle-class raised guys will connect with this one.

My favorite is Beautiful but Edge hit closer to the bones.

Really liked both movies - Beautiful Thing I've seen several times.

Another movie I enjoyed was "Trick" - not quite the same thing, but the go-go boy is ga-ga!!

I still believe MAURICE is the finest gay movie of all time.
