being American in Phuket

There has been some implication that visiting Phuket, being closer to the southern tip of Thailand, is perhaps a little chancy vis a vis potential unpleasant towards Americans with the south's Muslim population and recent military clashes.

 

Do you think this should discourage a visitor?

I don't think so, never had a problem. Too many foreign types there for them to bother with.

There have been some threats made against tourist venues in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Samui. There is always a chance that something could happen. I personally think that at some point something will happen (hopefully nothing too bad), but it hasn't stopped me from visiting most of those places. I really wouldn't sweat a visit to Phuket. But it definitely is not advisable to visit the predominantly Muslim provinces down around the Malaysia border. Even Malaysian tourists are avoiding those areas.
