I'm making my first trip leaving this Wednesday -- I've seen the previous posts -- for which I am most grateful -- but wondering if anyone has been there recently and has any recommendations.

From what I understand, there's been a couple of changes in the gay nightlife in recent months. There is a Sports Bar now where the boiz of Santo Domingo are hanging out to greet the tourists. Their web site is http://thesportsbar.blogspot.com/.

 

Also, Bar Phoenix, the legendary hustler bar, has been completely renovated and is now called Bar Friends. In addition to the ground floor bar, they now have a lounge on the 2nd floor and a rooftop terrace. Their web site is http://www.enchantingencounters.net/contact_us.html.

 

Matter of fact, I am leaving for Santo Domingo this week and will be throwing a 5 year anniversary party for me and my Dominican Papi, Samuel, this Saturday, January 14th at Bar Friends' 2nd floor lounge. We're having an open bar, a Dominican buffet, cake and champagne and a live Bachata band performing. And it's all free! There's sure to be a mixed crowd of bugarrones (hustlers) and gay Dominicans and tourists!

I hope that you still have time to read this.. I just got back from 2 weeks in Sto Domingo yesterday. The schedule goes like this: Sports Bar from 10:00 to 12 am...then on to JD's from 12 to 3:00 am, then on to Arena (aka Aire) until the sun comes up or you pass out whichever cums first. All three are within walking distance of each other although I would not advise walking alone in any city at 3;00 in the morning, but a small group would be ok. Have a great time, I know that I did.
