Just returned from Sao Paulo and several visits to Lagoa which is always alot of fun. However I wanted to give everyone a heads up about the sauna boys pricing. I was there with a friend who had never been there before and was like a kid in a candy store. I was helping him negotiate with the boys and they all were asking for Rs100. I told my friend to pass but he didn't listen and paid the price. I went over to the owner, who I know from previous visits and he said that the price hadn't gone up from the usual Rs50, but that the boys take advantage because they see we're foreigners. In all cases I stood firm at Rs50 and the boys finally agreed, but it was a pain to go back and forth and negotiate. My friend, against my objections kept paying Rs100, which is contributing to the problem.

I wanted to let everyone know about this experience, so they don't get talked into overpaying. I know Tri has talked about this in the past, but I had never experienced it to such an extent as with this past visit. I still think it's better to hold at Rs50 and tip for good service.

I have a feeling we're seeing the usual effort to take advantage of the peak of the peak season, Carnival! Once Carnival's over, so is the high season and the number of tourists drops off. It's not just escorts who try to profit during the frenzy, but staying at R$50 is the right move. Now that the dollar is tanking (it's worth R$2,60 today) that R$50 is worth more anyway! No point in contributing to igniting inflation again in Brazil!

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi,

I've been in Lagoa last week and gave my companion 50 reals and tipped him another 20. He was more than happy with this.

Also I invited him to have a drink with myself.

I must say, all this was a very nice experience.

:)

Greetings from Sao Paulo.

Rob

Rob, do you speak Portuguese?

I just arrived in Sao Paulo and would like to go to Lagoa Tuesday, but because I can not speak or understand Portuguese I am a little worried. I am some what used of Rio as I have gotten to meet a few people there. Sao Paulo is a first for me. I have been encouraged by Carlo to visit Lagoa so I know coming from him it must be a great place....Anyway I will see if I can build that courage up and visit Lagoa tomorrow....It sounds like a fun place to visit....

By the way I was given some really good advise from Carlo. When ever we take some to out Hotel, it makes no difference how well we may know the person and it makes no difference which hotel it is, as well as how well recommened the boy is, always make them give there information to the front desk......It´s for your safety as well the Hotel´s name. I was at the Atlantico and I saw boy´s come and they gave there information to the front desk with out any problem and there is nothing to be shy about either....Make it a habit..........

Have fun.....
