I tried to search what the Taxi fare would be from GIG (Rio) to the Atlantico as well as GRU (Sao Paulo) to the down town hotels...not sure of the hotel names but they are by the park and the gay strip.

Can anyone give me an idea as to what to expect to pay in both cities. Thx alot..........Have a great, fun, safe weekend.....:)

It's R$50 from GRU to Jardins in downtown Sao Paulo. The taxi kiosk is curbside on the ground level; they accept cash and credit card and they give you a coupon which you give to the driver. Airport taxis are safe since it's run by a coop (Guaracoop). Now hailing a taxi from downtown Sao Paulo to GRU is another matter. Make sure you ask the hotel concierge to confirm the fare before boarding your taxi; some will charge a round-trip fare.

To and from GRU there's a perfectly comfortable and convenient express bus service; fare is around R$15. Big, comfortable air conditioned buses every half hour or so. One route makes a circuit of the major hotels in and around Av. Paulista, so you can just taxi to one of the hotels (if you aren't staying at one on the route) and catch the bus from there.

Bus tickets are available from booths (Airport Express) on the arrivals level at GRU. On the return trip you pay the driver if you get on at one of the hotels. There's another route that drops you at a terminal downtown on the Praça da Republica. For the return trip you buy a ticket in the terminal.

There won't be anything to sweat about this; Brazil is surprisingly well organized.

Don't worry about the big suitcases. There are FREE luggage carts in the airports in Brazil, and the airport buses in SP are the big luxurious intercity type with luggage compartments. They'll check your bags (and give you receipts). If your hotel isn't on the bus route, it's no problem to just catch a taxi from where the bus drops you off, and the driver will help you with the bags.

Beware of the scam Atlantico bellboys play

Recent taxi experience in Rio:

from the airport: taxi stands asking price is 50R, but they easily settled for 45R.

from Hotel Atlantico: beware of the scam bellboys play -- they tell you that it's 50R and get a taxi with the meter off, then split the extra RR with the cabbie. Insist on the meter ON, and it comes to only 22R!
