I've seen tons of info here on sauna etiquette and how to deal with escorts in the saunas - thanks to all for that.

My question relates to non-escort clientele in saunas with boys and to all clients in those saunas that do not have escort services available (I've got a list of those somewhere ). :9

Does one carry on as one would in a regular sauna anywhere in the world , or is considered gauche to play with non-commercial types, especially in places with escorts (as for instance, in boy bars in Bangkok)? Do Brazilian men attend saunas mainly for the escorts, or is there regular activity amongst general clientele (as I've experienced in Mexico) despite presence of escorts? }( How do local guys react to gringos in the saunas?

I assume the cabine system would work the same, irrespective of the status of the guy. Also, is it likely that non-commercial guys are likely to expect or ask for payment?

Also, is the escort system as prevalent outside Rio and SP - say in Salvador or Recife?

Obrigado a todos.

In the literally hundreds of hours I have spent in the 5 "escort" saunas in Rio, I have never seen a Non- Escort guy try to pick up on another non-escort guy! Everyone is going there to hook up with one(or more) of the sauna boys.

There are the local Rio men who go to the suanas, but again looking to hook up with the young men for Pay there.

They are friendly to Americans. I have never encountered any animosity towards Americans. In fact the gentlemen who is helping arrange our party on the 24th at 202, is one of the partners in 202 and is a local guy I met on my first visit to Rio at a sauna he was not a owner of, and he took the time to explain to me in English, how it operated and who some of the boys were.

Then only non escort suana I have been in was LeBoy, which is above the club of the same name. There it did operate like any suana here in the U.S., you hooked up with someone you connect with and no payment was expected. I went once, but the number and quality of the guys was not like the escort saunas!

Tomcal's right. Clients at the escort saunas are there to pick up escorts, not other clients. People who don't want to trick with escorts go to the non-escort gay saunas, which work just like similar saunas everywhere else. In those saunas, the sexual encounters are non-commercial. (BTW, at non-escort saunas in Brazil, cabins are usually free. You can't rent them, you only can rent a locker. You can use the cabins to get it on when you meet someone, but you can't occupy a cabin by yourself, or for the whole evening.)

An exception to this might be in a city with few saunas, especially a smaller city. In that case, it's possible that everyone goes to the same place, including some escorts looking for clients (and vice-versa) but there will also be contacts taking place between clients. However, even in such saunas it's likely that the clients looking for escorts are going to be almost exclusively into that, and the clients who are looking to hook up with other clients will be ignoring the escorts altogether. In the bigger cities, though, like Rio, Sãõ Paulo, Porto Alegre, etc., the saunas are either escort saunas or non-escort saunas.

I do agree about the smaller saunas outside the bigger cities, I

"did" it inadvertently, I wasn't complaining, with one beautiful local in Recife. One of the few times when a bit of the lingo might have helped, or might not!, it could have stymied the whole encounter. I thought he was working, he showed some interest and we fumbled our way into a cabin. It was the only time either, I had two other encounters, one a pilot who obviously did yoga in his spare time, and another very passionate man in Salvador, he was huge , and thankfully spoke great english, so he knew exactly what I would do.

Sweet memories.

The Brazil scene is not at all like Mexican saunas. If you get tired of young, handsome, virile studs with perfect pecs, killer lips, and "excessive" endowments, and want to pursue noncommerical locals, forget about the clients at the gay-for-pay saunas and go the standard rent-boy-free local saunas. That is the place for horny, local "regular guys." I found the ones in Rio to be interesting.

I'm not saying it is impossible to make a match with a client at a rent-boy sauna, just very highly unlikely. Like Aquina, I've linked up a couple of times with local clients but those were unusual exceptions -- once in Brasilia with a young man who unexpectedly turned out to be an M.D. not a rental, and once at Lagoa two weeks ago.

One additional thought regarding local clients...

Many are older gentlemen who are quite gracious and exceedingly polite. I have found them to often know a fair amount of English and to be usually happy to chat if they are alone. I have always enjoyed those visits.

If you are new to the scene, I strongly suspect there is an added advantage to talking conspicuously to a regular local client for a while. It makes you look less like an exploitable virgin passing through town.

Among the first questions you typically get from the boys is whether this is your first time in Brazil, how many days you will be in town, and whether your work here. Your answers tell them the cumulative odds that they will be seeing you in the future and, at least for some boys, may influence how hard they work to satisfy you.

I agree with BillyZ's statement completely!! Now, they know I come down there every 3 to 4 months, but in the beginning couple of trips I would always tell the boys that I was coming back in Augusto or Juno, or whatever and that I was going to be here for the next 10 days, so they knew that would be a chance of seeing me again. They always expressed alot of interest and would give me their cell phone numbers, and ask what day I was coming back to that sauna, or could they meet me at that hotel tomorrow? I always felt they, being the good businessmen that many of them are(don't forget that) did try harder, they want repeat customers!

I went to the Persona Terma in Salvador and it worked exactly like the Rio sauna.

I went late on a weekday and it was very quiet. I had sessions with an escort, the bartender, and the towel boy.

They were very gracious. When I was ready to leave, the towel boy walked me up to a major intersection and got me into a cab.

thinking back it is the case that they ask you how long you are in Rio for. It hadn't dawned on me until it was said here. Mind you when I said it was my third visit I often got expressions of surprise. Not many British visitors it seems.

having just returned from Recife, Fortaleza, Salvador, and Porto Alegre i experienced saunas that actually had a fair number of attractive clients in addition to rentboys. There are clients who are looking to meet Americans and it is possible if you wish. This was especially true in Recife and Porto Alegre.
