I'm not sure this is a cat I want to let out of the bag, but what the heck. However, this is for the Portuguese fluent only. My experience on the site is that they're NOT very welcoming of foreigners who don't speak Portuguese. I guess they figure there are plenty of other places for such people to chat. (This doesn't mean you have to be able to write like Saramago or Jorge Amado, but you should be reasonably functional. These guys are on the board to cruise, not give language classes.)

 

There's a pretty vast gay chat board system at http://www.uol.com.br which is the largest ISP in Latin America, with a lot of content like AOL. Click on "Bate-papo" in the bar on the left. On the next screen, select either "Sexo" or "Imagens Eroticas". There are usually more people in the latter, but at times there are so many images flashing by that it's virtually impossible to actually chat with anyone, so if you really want to chat select "Sexo," which doesn't support pictures. Next select an appropriate "Gays e afins" category. After selecting one of those categories, you should get a screen in which you get to select an "apelido" (nickname). Type in a handle, then click OK. Don't fool with the other boxes on that page, they're extras for UOL subscribers only, like icons. Next you should get a page listing all the chatrooms, with the number of people in each one. Non-subscribers can enter any room with LESS than 30 chatters in it, so check the numbers. Sometimes the numbers on that page don't match the reality, so if the room you pick has hit the limit you'll get redirected back to the list of rooms, with a red and white bar across the top that basically says "pick another room." You can click on the keyhole icon to "spy" on who's in the room and, scrolling down, get a taste of what's going on. Click on the footprints to enter the room. If you use the view function, you can go back to the main list by clicking the return arrow on that page, which will get you an updated list with occupancy numbers. When you click to get into a room, you'll first get a screen asking you to type the 4 character alpha-numeric code that appears into the box on the screen and hit "enter." This is a new feature to keep out the endless spam messages that were clogging up the rooms.

 

Once in the room, if you want the text to scroll automatically and you're on a PC (some of the features, like this one, don't work on Macs) click on the box above marked "rolagem automática da tela." If you start chatting with someone, on the lower bar click "reservadamente" to keep your conversation visible just to the person you're chatting with. The box with TODOS will allow you to select who to chat with. Type your actual message in the empty lower box and then click "enviar" or just hit "enter."

 

When entering the room, you should type in "Oi," or "Olá" to everyone, then switch to reservadamente. Even in that mode, everyone can still see what you write if it's to TODOS. If you don't get any nibbles, even after you send some out "reservadamente," you can get out of that room by clicking "Sair." That'll take you back to the list of rooms and you can try another one.

Hey Tri - I took him out for a test drive a couple of weeks ago in Sao Paulo and will be posting a review in a few days. O.K. I wasn't going to say anything because I couldn't be absolutely certain, but i removed my watch during our playtime and then, as I was leaving my hotel shortly after - having walked about a block - I realized I didn't have it on and figured I had just forgotten it. Well it never surfaced. So could I have put it back on and somehow not secured it properly and had it drop off between the room and that block away?????
