Thank you, Tri!

You're a veritable font of information. You should consider writing a book, "The Not-So- Lonely (at Least for an Hour or so) Planet Guide to South America." And thanks for alerting me to the fact that this site has a search engine. Trixie, for all her charms, isn't always the brightest star in the Heavens.

I'm planning a trip to Salvador, Brazil next year, possibly during Carnaval. Does anyone know much about the gay scene there? I assume there must be bars, but how about escorts? And where in Salvador would one go to meet them? Most all the escort info I've found on Brazil via the internet centers on Rio & Sao Paulo.

Trix, you must not have read all the stuff about Brazil right here on M4M, including the Brazilian Saunas review, because there's information about Salvador there. Use the search function here for Salvador or Bahia and see what comes up!

There is indeed a gay (and escort) scene in Salvador, as there is in all large Brazilian cities. And Salvador is large, with 2.5 - 3 million people.

There are lists of bars, discos (boates) and saunas on http://www.netgay.com.br (look under the state of Bahia). If you can read some Portuguese, you can try http://www.geocities.com/jonatas2000br/salvadormix.html

Also, if you read Portuguese, you can look in the classifieds of "A Tarde," the main local paper. It should be under the category of "Serviços Pessoais" or "Acompanhantes" or something like that.

For nearly 200 years, Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, so there is an impressive architectural and historical heritage in the old colonial center. There are also beautiful beaches, including gay beaches.

Salvador is the most African city in Brazil, culturally as well as racially, which strongly influences food, customs, music, etc. Of course, this also means that Salvador is a great city to visit if you're attracted to black men! However, blacks in Brazil are NOT like blacks in the U.S. Even though there is discrimination in Brazil, there isn't the "us vs. them" mentality that exists in the U.S. Culturally, everyone in Brazil is African to a significant extent, regardless of their color, so there's never been the kind of separation found in the U.S. This means it's easy to meet people and make new friends.

Go, and have a fabulous time! And send back info about your discoveries!

Forgot. Salvador has one of the oldest and largest gay rights groups in Brazil, the Grupo Gay da Bahia. Check their website at http://www.ggb.org.br and click on "Roteiros e Serviços" for lists of bars/clubs/saunas. It's in Portuguese, but you can at least get the names and addresses. If you e-mail the group, they might be able to hook you up with a local guide, but I don't know how they feel about escorting. It may not be politically correct! ;)

Just got back from Salvador. Had a great time - met someone at the gay beach on the bay side of the Barra. Went to Rio's Sauna which I was told is the best in town. Didn't compare with Sao Paulo and RIO saunas so was glad I met someone. Did go to one of the sex motels which was great - $R14 for two hours - SO CHEAP and very clean. BTW - my hotel was not too cool with my bringing someone back to my room. Called after 10 minutes to tell me he had to come down. I was pretty angry about this since I am sure it had to do with his skin color. Didn't hesitate to register my displeasure with this policy.

Yes, Trilingual, you are a 'godsend' and a wealth of imperative and salient information for the novices. I second that motion: please do write a book or booklet or pamphlet, if the latter will be profitable.

Or better yet, would you be willing to write an extensive article about Brazil in OUR WORLD if we urged the editors, hoping they would be ameniable to this suggestion? It's only two brilliant thoughts...
