Gays? In Uruguay? Yes!!

Yes there is a gay life in Uruguay!!

In Montevideo (the Uruguayan capital city) it is not very easy to find escorts advertising their services in the internet. Anyways you can find some of the in the online version of Diario El Pais: http://www.diarioelpais.com.

Go to “Clasificados”, then to “Servicios” and then to “Mensajes Especiales”(special messages). There are a lot of adds published by women and some from gay or bi boys.

Also you will find some links in the Starmedia website of Uruguaygay.

Usually avoid cruising downtown in Montevideo streets (it seems not very safe).

Some friends in Uruguay use to cruise in the Rambla (that’s the sea side Avenue of Montevideo) where lots of people use to jog and others cruise there in the afternoon till late in the evening.

There are five or six discos that you will find in most of the above mentioned links.

A very nice place to go is Punta del Este, the main Uruguayan (and probably the nicest in South America) summer resort.

You can easily find boys an men to escort you there, both in the streets, discos and pubs and also in the Casinos.

A good place to go in Punta del Este is the Moby Dick Pub just in front of the Punta del Este Yacht Club and Seaport. You will find the nicest boys of the Rio de la Plata (Argentines and Uruguayans) in Moby Dick. Even if it is not a gay pub, most gay and bi boys go there.

There is also a gay Disco named Mercury in the beginning of Avenida Gorlero (the main Avenue of the Peninsula, Punta del Este's down town area) next to the Bus Terminal (not a very nice place).

Moby Dick and Mercury keep open everyday during summertime and Fridays and Saturdays all year long.

If you prefer the street for cruising, go to the sea side street of the Peninsula or to the Avenida Gorlero where you will find lots of gay boys and young men. For street cruising in Punta del Este you should be there in January or February during southern Summer.

You can also cruise in Maldonado, a town near Punta del Este (the capital of the State).

Main cruising areas there are Sarandi and 18 de Julio streets along the four or five blocks next to the main Maldonado’s square.

Maldonado remains very active all the year long on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8 pm to 1 or 2 am.

Lots of boys will be there trying to find clients for the hour or the night. They will ask you about U$S 15 to U$S 30 for the hour.

If you think you are engaging someone who can be less than 18 yo, ask him to show you his ID card as 18 yo is the legal consenting age in Uruguay.

If you do not want to take one of this boys to your Hotel room or apartment there is a very nice, gay friendly motel, the “Posada de la Luna” with nice rooms with good bathrooms. Mostly every boy can guide you to the Posada. It’s prices are near U$S 20 – 40 an hour depending on the season and the kind of room you choose.

Enjoy Punta, you won’t regret it!!

RE: Gays? In Uruguay? Yes!!

¡Gracias, Daniel, de nuevo!

I can only agree with Daniel that Punta del Este is probably the smartest resort in South America. There are a couple of places in Chile and Búzios in Brazil that are in the same league, but not as large (or as gay). When you think of Punta, think of the Hamptons of South America: this is where the well-heeled go to work on their tans, have a good time, and generally be beautiful during the season, which is January and February (with January being more "in" than February). Many if not most of the restaurants and shops are only open during the season and close the rest of the year. That isn't to say that Punta isn't beautiful almost any time of year, but you'll find it very quiet, and any out-of-season cruising is, as Daniel points out, going to be found in adjoining Maldonado.

A few things: Because the season is short, businesses have to make a year's income in two months, so Punta is NOT a cheap resort during high season. Some of the more "in" beaches are out of town (heading north towards Brazil along the Atlantic side) so a rent-a-car is a good idea. To get an idea of how the South American well-to-do live, take a drive through the interior residential areas of Punta, like Beverly Hills (yes, there is one!) to ogle the houses, which are really summer "cottages" that only get used a couple months of the year! If you visit and fall for the place, you should know that there is a year-round colony of retired gays (mostly Argentine) who spend their time visiting, playing cards and bickering. . . :-) It's not a very big town!

I'll defer to Daniel's expertise on Montevideo, but it is worth visiting. The city is very attractive and low key. The people couldn't be sweeter. (The ethnic make-up is similar to Buenos Aires, except that there is still a small remaining Afro-Uruguayan community.) If the Teatro Solís is open, have a look or attend a performance: it's a real jewel box opera house in the classic horseshoe shape. The riverside drive (the Ramblas, each section of which has a different name even though it's the same road) is very pleasant, MUCH nicer than the riverfront in Buenos Aires which is mostly cut off from public access. It's somewhat like Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, with parks and beaches, but the buildings aren't as tall. After passing Pocitos, Montevideo's own little Copacabana, the Rambla ends up in Carrasco, an upscale neighborhood where you can drive around a bit to see how the Uruguayan elite lives. If your mental image of Latin America is that it all looks like Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez, a drive through Montevideo or a summer vacation in Punta del Este will erase those thoughts forever! :-)
