I'm sorry, but I tried to find the answer to my simple question at gay.com and was only met with hostility from the London boyz there.

I am flying to London next week for four days for the sole purpose of maintaining my Continental Airlines Status. (They have a very good program and I fly them exlusively)

However, I realize that in London I will need some different connections to get my computer to work, download the reviews and upload the site. Everything I have is on a DELL laptop. My question of any computer saavy person in Britain is: What do I need to connect to the net from my laptop? I do not know if AOL is available there, but I also can connect via IBM.net, which I think is now ATTglobal and it is available there.

But should I bring any other connectivity items? I upload everything with FrontPage, so I cannot use an internet cafe unless they let me plug into their network and I do not know if I can even do that.

It takes about an hour to upload at 56K each day. I realize that in London telephone charges are by the minute, but my main concern is being able to get the site up each day that I am on vacation.

I found a place to stay, so I'm not hinting for that. I just want information. They have two phone lines, but seem aprehensive about my motives and of course, if they knew who I was and what I was doing, I would be tossed out on my ear in a minute. I'm staying in a nice home in a comfortable neighborhood somewhere is SW London with very straight-laced people who probably don't drink gin in the morning like the Queen Mother.

If you can help me, please let me know. I'm sure the information is available on the internet, but I'm lazy.

Thanks,

At the risk of making a total fool of myself... I've never needed anything else anywhere to get online than the appropriate power and phone plugs for that country. They sell nice little bags with complete sets for worldwide travel at major airports. Never let me down.

As far as basic connectivity goes, all you will need is a phone jack adaptor - if you can't find one at the airport when you leave you should be able to get one in the UK at a Radio Shack (yes, they have them over there!) or similar store.

Same deal for the power plug adaptor - it's always wise to check that the power supply on your laptop is a 110 / 220 dual voltage one, but vitualy all of them are these days - and I'm sure that the Dell ones will be.

Who you actually connect to while you are in the UK is a little more difficult. AOL exists in the UK, but I'm not sure that someone with a US AOL account can just dial in to one of the UK AOL access numbers. You would probably have to check this with AOL.

OK - I just looked at AOL's web page and they appear to have two access numbers for the UK:

0800 013 8585

0800 279 7449

Those are toll free calls in the UK (just like a US 800 number) but it says that there is a $3.95 surcharge ... I'm not *sure* but it looks like this is a "per hour" surcharge, in which case it looks like a very good deal.

Anyway, you can look at:

for more details.
