BLUE BOY/WHY NOT Bar... well, now it's about the only act in town. While I have been a good customer there for over 6 years, I was a bit taken aback now by the place.

Stopped by this famous boys' club for an evening of entertainment.

 

Not much has changed over the years. Some have described it as seedy, but it is not really; perhaps a bit too dark in some places.

 

There is always a group of boys hanging around, but lately they preen and purr over each other and have too much attitude.

 

Cal, the American owner, is a nice enough guy, but becomes too strict, controlling and even impolite with some clients. He actually marched into a restaurant where I was having dinner with one of his guys (all paid for up front) and embarrassed me by calling him back to the club for a sex show. We were in the middle of the main course, rushing to finish the meal in the 1-hour time limit, and still had a few minutes.

 

Cal - if you read this, that is considered bad form, no matter how you defend yourself. If the boys have a show, then keep them away from clients until later.

 

As for the boys, I found the majority there now to be too feminine, or too queeny/twinky. There was one exceptional stand-out, however: JAIME from Colombia (who goes by "Jimmy"). A Latino lover's dream.

 

My third time around with JOSEF was also nice, although he has now shaved off all the hair he had on his chest - a pity! Of the rest, the only one who caught my eye was LEON.

 

As for the show... well if you like twink types acting like "Queen for a Day" - then by all means go. Most at the show are older guys (late 40's and up), and the drinks are pretty steep. BUT it's all that's left of the once thriving boys' clubs.

Amsterdam certainly isn't what it used to be - and I've only been going there for the last 4 or 5 years ...

 

I've never particularly liked Blue Boy - and Cal, the owner, is probably the main reason ... he just isn't very "customer friendly" :-(

 

Last time I was in there I walked out after 15 minutes of being ignored by the barman who was talking to three girls sitting at the bar (and, yes, they *were* real girls).

 

On a previous occasion Cal treated me as if I were an idiot for wanting to take one of the boys for 3 hours instead of just 1.

 

His insistance (with me at least) on being paid *before* you take a boy to a room is irritating and has cost him a *lot* of my money - it's like he wants you to leave as soon as you are finished when, in fact, you might want to stay around and look for another boy. As a result I have hardly ever spent more than 300 NLG at Blue Boy on any of my trips to Amsterdam (trips which usually have an "entertainment" budget of around 5000 NLG)

 

The incident in the restaurant is inexcusable, but somehow doesn't surprise me.

BoysClub 21 just a few doors down on Spuistraat was still doing good business when I was there in September - in fact (possibly because the other clubs had closed) there were more good quality boys working there than I had seen for quite a long time.

 

As far as I know the club is still open (earlier this week I got some email from one of the boys who works there and he didn't mention anything about the club being closed).

 

Of course Blue Boy and BoysClub 21 have a rather different ambience from each other - if you like one you probably won't be so keen on the other - someone who had worked in all of the clubs in Amsterdam once described the difference to me like this: "BoysClub 21 is a brothel, and Blue Boy is a hustler bar with rooms".

I just returned from a trip to Amsterdam and I have to agree that the selection at Blue Boy was not what I anticipated. I had a large "escort" budget to work with and I only spent a fraction of what was available at Blue Boy. Oops, you are right. This club is still oeprating, and your description is correct. My only problem is that i many previous visits, I rarely found someone who did not look like he just came out of a starvation camp of sorts. I know they do have some good (and muscular) gys working there, just my bad timing.

 

And the rooms are cleaner and nicer at Club 21 too, although the steep staircases (a very common Dutch feature) can be daunting for someone not very athletic.

After reading your own input, I recalled another bad incident with Cal some 3 or 4 years ago. It was just after Christmas and I was in town for a few days.

 

The downstairs and upstairs bars were both "dead". I eventually started talking to a twink type downstairs - not my type, I thoguht, but at least he was British, so no problem with conversation. I eventually felt compelled to take him to a room - and he was a very pleasant surprise.

 

I enjoyed the guy so much, I engaged him for an extended visit the next evening, which was to be 3 hours. I had planned only dinner (no kidding). This guy was such delightful company that as we headed back to the Bar (he had to "report in" on time) he insisted we continue in my hotel. Well, the downside was the wrangling over how to pay the extended fee without returning (on a rainy night) all the way to the Bar.

 

Now the other bad "Cal custom" - he must have a timer on from the time you put the money down: on innumerable occasions, he has telephoned the room at least 5 minutes (sometimes more) before the 1-hour to annoucen very succinctly that "Time's up" and the escorts are so frightened you barely have time to wash up, dress and be out of there - and then met by his glare.

 

I did not intend this to be a "Dump on Cal" column but clients should be warned. You have to kind of treat his fire with equal aplomp and fire. Then he backs off ... a bit...

 

On a kiss and tell - I found most of the boys there at BLUE BOY would VERY WILLINGLY work out a private with the client after hours, kind of a "Screw you" to their boss.

Yes, I'm afraid that most of the boys working in the clubs look like ... well ... "boys" ...

 

It wasn't so bad a couple of years ago when there were still guys from Eastern Europe working in the clubs in Amsterdam - there were some very nice Bel Ami / Kristian Bjorn types from the Czech Republic and Hungary. Unfortunately the Netherlands cracked down on non-EU citizens working illegally in the country and, since the clubs in Amsterdam operate as legitimate businesses the Eastern European boys had to go.

 

I think that a lot of the reason for the demise of the clubs in Amsterdam is that Eastern Europe has opened up so much and is now a viable alternative destination for someone looking for this kind of thing.
