A friend and I just had a great conversation which brought back some really great memories of The Saint in New York. As far as I'm concerned, we will never know another club like it. Does anyone have any memories to share, especially of dance songs you may remember from that time and/or favorite DJ's? I used to like sitting way up top of the bleachers while they played somewhat classical music around 3 or 4 in the morning.

I remember it well. About 8 years ago friends and I went there for a pre-Halloween party. It was open to the public, gay and straight. However, straight folk were limited to the main floor near the dance floor. Gays with an invite (easy to get) were to enter on the side door, and had reign of the entire place, two levels. For once the straights were restricted in where and what they could do.

They had some snacks out for the queer folk. My buddy Mark ate too many reece's peanut butter cups and proceeded to get ill.

There was a backroom with guys groping and sucking each other. Somehow three big-haired girls from Jersey found their way into this room. The look of shock and horror was priceless.

Otherwise was just a fun dance bar. Never made it back. Is it still open?

I was there from the first party to the last one--even when we went back to the space after the first closing party.

So many wonderful memories.

A couple of clarifications from what has already been posted:

--classical music was played as the last music of the night. In the beginning, the club closed around 7-9am, later in it's life it would close 10am or so on non-party nights and well past noon on party nights (latest was 6pm on a New Year's party). So classical music was never played around 3 or 4 in the morning.

--to cp8036, I don't think that was the Saint you went to. The Saint did not have a backroom but there was a third floor (above the dome) where people would do backroom activities. By the time that straight people were allowed at the Saint, backroom activities were pretty much gone. There was a time where access to the third floor was closed.

Towards the end of the Saint, there were straight nights, usually Friday nights, and anyone could come in. Since the downstairs was not a dance area, the dance floor was on the second floor, people being restricted to the downstairs area would have been a cocktail party. And by this time, the entrance was always through the side door. And they never offered Reece's cups as a snack--it was always fruit, cookies or pretzels.

It was a lot more than a fun dance bar.

Factoid: Zeiss, the premier manufacturer of star projectors, refused to sell the Saint one of their star projectors because they didn't want their equipment associated with a gay club.

Thanks for the pointers :) I lost my head for a second, I was reflecting on the Limelight.

Limelight = Reece's

Saint = pretzels
