Hi,

I'm wondering why so many of the people who post on this board have their profiles either turned off or have no information in them.

I enjoy knowing a little bit about the people who are posting.

Any thoughts?

I add my name to those who are wondering about the Profiles and add a question: I can't figure out how to go back and re-do my profile. I'm sure its obvious, but I could use a clue.

Changing your profile

Bend,

To change your profile:

1) Click on the "User" icon while in the lobby.

2) Click on the "Change Profile option."

I, too, wish that more of us would post a profile. It's always helpful to know who you are communicating with.

Everyone should also check to make sure that their profile is active. I thought mine was and, inspired by this post, decided to check out what it said, since I didn't remember. I found it "disabled" -- I'm not sure when/why I did this, or if I ever did. But it was.

Your actuary jokes couldn't be more on target.

Well N, it's all a matter of what one is comfortable with. Most people, it seems to me, are concerned (overly so I think) with discretion to put any personal information out there. (There are exceptions of course.) Not that I'm against discretion, but threre is interesting personal information about oneself that comes nowhere near identifiying the individual. Although if someone was hell-bent to identify an individual such info would certainly be pieces of the puzzle in the long run. As for me, I cannot imagine who would be that interested in me.

Also, as mentioned in another thread, frequent posters can't help but reveal some information about themselves in the course of their postings over time. For instance, any long term reader of these boards knows where I was originally from, the geographical area where I live now and what my profession is. If they also read reviews they know about other aspects of me. I personally don't care except for the potential cranks out there who get a bug up their ass to make the lives of others miserable.

One of the freqeuent posting escorts of yesterday, now retired, started his own web site, now defunct, and invited members of this board to join. The issue of profiles came up there too. Of maybe 30 members there may have been one or two profiles and not much content in those. He started a campaign to have members post profiles -- a dismal failure -- though a handful of us did. After some consideration, I thought why the hell not... so I posted as long a profile as the web page constraints would allow. It told quite a bit about me as a person, the background I come from, the range of attitudes and ideas I have come into contact with, my ancestors that settled New Amsterdam... all in 512 bytes. I didn't feel threatened at all by it. But in practice, it was a small community of a half-dozen or so, the rest were lurkers most of whom never contributed anything. So we five or six used the board as a forum for discussion, sometimes involving some rather personal issues, even in front of the lurkers -- they didn't matter because to us they really weren't there. We did maintain a modicum of discretion, even there -- but at the same time we were really quite loose about it.

I mention the other board because at the time I considered posting that profile as well as some other personal issue stuff here. I ultimately decided against it -- it was no more personal here than at the other board, but what was different here was the atmosphere and range of behavior of the individuals milling about. There, we had a small civil community with a bunch of anonymous lurkers behind the curtain but out of site -- as good as not there to us active members. However, this neighborhood can get quite contentious at times, and it is probably not best to put too much information out there that someone might hurl back at you in some way or other -- so I decided not to. I do not think time has proven me wrong about the neighborhood. So for me it just boils down to a willingness to share personal information with those who gather with you in a friendly environment.

Mind your own fucking business!!!!

He-he...Just kidding! : )

As for myself, I agree with those who say it's all a matter of personal comfort. I've been surfin' the web for quite a few years now, but have only recently ventured into the realm of message boards and chat rooms. (Actually, I still haven't made it to a chat room yet, but that's another story!)

By nature I'm a pretty shy, easy going guy, so I have my reservations about filling out profiles. That's just the way I am! I have to get to know the people I'm dealing with before my comfort level allows me to cut loose. But, I'm that way meeting people face to face as well! I have no doubt that when my insecurities about posting personal info have been proven wrong, I'll jump right in and revise my settings.

It also seems to me that some people just want to bathe in the total anonymity of the faceless, impersonal, be anything you want to be, internet!

Whatever! It takes ALL kinds to make up this wonderful community!
