DuPont Circle in D.C.

In the Washington Blade (DC"s gay publication) plus listings on escort web sites many escorts and massuers advertise locations on or near DuPont Circle. I know it is a street in DC but is it a hub for

gay activity? What's the skinny?

Yes. More than a street it is neighborhood.

It's actually a traffic circle that's the intersection of several streets. (Pierre L'Enfant didn't do that city any favors when he laid out those damn diagonal streets.)

 

But yes, the neighborhood surrounding the circle is the "gay hood".

Actually, Dupont Circle USED to be the gay hub, but no longer. The longest running gay bar in DC used to be a few blocks west of Dupont Circle on P street... Mr. P's. But, its no longer open. There also used to be a few good bars very close to Dupont circle, including the Frat House, The Fireplace, and the Circle Bar. But, the Frat House has changed names to Omega and isn't nearly as good, the Fireplace is very run down and nasty, and the Circle Bar has closed.

 

The really decent gay bars are farther east of Dupont circle now. Most gay bois hang out on 17th street, or even 14th street in JR's, Cobalt, Halo and Hamburger Mary's/Titan bar. So, Dupont Circle isn't the gay mecca that it once was.

 

Plus, housing prices in Dupont Circle have shot up so much that most young gay guys can't afford to live anywhere near it anymore. That is just anohter reason why the gay scene has moved farther east.
