The Cabana Boys only do long appointments (evenings, overnights, etc.), which makes them expensive. I think the original name of the service was Aaron Tanner Entertainment---if someone is a dyed blond twink in Atlanta with a name that sounds like it was invented by "Aaron Tanner", he's usually a Cabana Boy.

Thanks for the name of the site, but I think I've seen enough. I was just checking out the Atlanta section on Rentboy. The site has a stat card for each escort. One of the questions is Safe Sex. Calvin Christopher, as well as 1-2 other Cabana Boys listed next to Safe Sex: "Prefer not to say." To me, that is the same as saying NO. There were escorts who said, "Always." Now that doesn't mean it's the truth, but it was a reply option. I assume No was also an option, but I didn't see it in anyone's stat card.

 

On another issue, since when did Atlanta become such an expensive city for escorts? Besides the Cabana Boys charging a minimum 3 hrs. for $600, just about every escort on Rentboy was charging $250/hr. Has Atlanta become the NYC of the south? The cost of living in Atlanta certainly doesn't justify it.

No it doesnt. What we are seeing is the internet-ization of the escort market IMO. I suspect the rationale goes likes this... escorts in Anytown USA search the internet , see prices in NY or MIA or LA, compare themselves to 'those guys', conclude that "I am worth as much as he is, probably more". Now some guys keep their feet on he ground and realize their market won't support those levels. Others figure they will ask it and go from there. Still others go into porn: video or websites and expect a premium for the notoriety. Some travel to big city venues occasionally or by contract which reinforces their attitudes.

 

Without the internet, I suspect the average rate would be between a third and a half of what is quoted today. The other side of the coin is that the supply would be much less and certainly of lower average quality not to mention essentially nonexistent higher-end professionals that have the great reputations.

 

This phenomenon has not permeated Canada to a great extent. I see a one or two guys in Vancouver and in Toronto try to push the envelope for Canada but not many and Montreal has Niko#3. Apparently the Canadian client base wont support it in general. (Maybe there is a lesson there.) Also, there is more competition from street boys and agencies.

 

I shop very few US escorts anymore due primarily to general rate creep. My money goes much further in Canada, and I am fortunate enough to live near enough to take frequent advantage.

 

When I shop US as I did in NY last Spring I did my homework and scoured the interenet sites and AOL companion rooms. I ended my research after listing better than a half-dozen hot candidiates that quoted me $150 - 200, one even less. I eventually settled on a hot brazilian boy from rentboy at $150. Regarding escort prices---the going rate in Atlanta tends to be about $175, with some at $150 and some at $200. Check out the other websites and the reviews here and you'll notice that this is more the norm. The Rentboy advertisers are a skewed bunch for Atlanta. You have lots of gangsta-wannbes, the Cabana boys and out of town visitors. You also have Tony Cummings, who is really more of a national escort--perhaps the Cabana guys aspire to being him.

 

If you go to Men4RentNow or AmericanMale, you'll see avery different selection and more of them will be the skinny, sometimes skanky looking blondes with bad dye jobs that seem to be a specialty of the Southeast.

 

Tampa Yankee maybe right that these guys think of themselves as being as good as someone in NYC or LA. Atlanta is a really a "full of shit" place and you're always hearing inflated opinions of everything, yet at base it's a pretty generic, culturally conservative place and the escorts skew toward lousy customer service, despite the presence of a few notables like Cummings.

 

One consideration about Rentboy is that it may be seen as a way of advertising to an upscale business traveler market. I suspect that one reason that Atlanta has so many weak escorts is that they can rely on conevntion-goers who probably won't be back again for 5 years or the kind of business people who don't come to ATL very frequently.

 

Where Tampa Yankee's argument falls abit apart is that there are plenty of other cities where even the Rentboy guys don't charge high prices. Seattle is a good example of this. Austin is another. As for the internet jacking up prices, I don't think they've really changed as much in last 5-6 years (which would coincide with the web explosion) as he we sould suggest.
