Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens September 22, 2026.  The museum has been hosting previews.  I went yesterday.

The location is in Exposition Park, Los Angeles.

It's huge, as one might see from pictures of the exterior. 

There is a wide variety of works displayed, and much more.  A library.  A café.  Theaters.  Outside spaces.  

I spent 5 hours viewing collections and watching film, but did not experience nearly everything.  I tend to stop and try to understand what I'm looking at, which takes time, of course.   

If you go, I recommend to have a game plan.  Perhaps go for an early morning slot, stop for lunch in the café and then continue.  Some of the external landscaping is not done, if that matters.  So, by waiting, you may get a different sense of the place when the landscaping construction is ready.

I discussed in another thread my anticipation to see the J.C. Leyendecker pieces.  Unfortunately, these were located across various spaces, which left me to go on a treasure hunt to find them.  The Leyendecker pieces were dwarfed by the number of works by Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish.  I loved the Maxfield Parrish collection. 

I hope to go again, someday!

The shape and color of the building is slight variation of the Frank Wright civic center building in San Rafael.  It was the first thing I thought of when I saw a picture of the new museum.  Not surprising since George grew up in San Rafael.  It's kind of funny.  I can see where he got the idea for various things in Star Wars from his life here.   The AT-AT Walkers sure look like the cargo container lifts in the port of Oakland. 😁

The place is huge.

There is one gallery of sci fi film creations.  That is just one of many, many sections.

Hoping to visit it this month. The Star Wars items are only a small part of the collection. People don't realize how much art he collected with his billions.  Good for him instead spending it on show off toys like some of the other billionaires.
