John of John, Douglas Stuart

Douglas Stuart was interviewed on PBS Newshour about his life and new novel, John of John.

There are a number of interviews and reviews found on the Internet.  I skimmed a few, without suffering too many spoilers.

I enjoyed his first two novels, Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo.

John of John sounds very appealing to me.

I tried the first few chapters of his first book and put it aside. Still John of John amazed me. One of the best novels I’ve ever read.

Reading it and loving it.  He and his dad have such honest interactions.  He's kind of a brat, understandably:  I thought I grew up in an isolated community (800 people, nearest movie theater 45 miles away) but he lives in an equally small town, or smaller, but at the end of the world.  I'm not quite buying how he talks to his grandma.  Can't imagine anyone being that crass with their own grandparents.  Great book so far.  I think he just had to get the sadness out of him, his funny drunk now dead Mom out of him, with the first two books, and now we'll see a less morose Douglas Stuart.
