RE: Another scary happening

BoN, yes a Sub 7 Trojan is bad stuff but most anti-virus software "knows" about the common ones.

The bad news is that too few people run anit-virus software. The good news is that a personal firewall will generally protect you from a Sub 7 attack, even if you get infected. The bad news :-( is that too few people use a personal firewall.

The real insidious threat out there right now is DDoS attacks. That's where your PC is unwittingly a party to Distributed Denial of Service attacks on a specific website. Microsoft, the FBI, and the White House have been targets. Again, a good firewall should keep you out of the fray.

Many people think that being on dial-up (and hence a non-static IP address) makes them safe, but they're not. If you're on a dial-up connection, install a firewall software product. You'll be amazed at the number of attacks it reports.

My favorite source of information about this stuff is Steve Gibson's http://www.grc.com. He writes in an "every man" style that novices can read, and he has two invaluable tests you can run: "Shields Up!" and "Probe My Ports" to see how vulnerable you are. The latter sounds dirty but it can be greatly useful and the recommendations the site makes are sound.

Read Gibson's descriptions of tracking down a DDoS attack against his own site by A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD HACKER. It's long, but even my mother read it from beginning to end. It's fascinating.

And for God's sake if you're not running SOME form of Anti-Virus software, get some now and keep it updated regularly.

Practice safe HEX, guys.

Matt thanks for you responce and I agree but there is a review of Michael that states that the reviewer thought he may have been "partying" while in his area. So I just wanted clarification.

Looking at this again I find it funny that Michael started this topic about listings on other boards and misleading information. It also was him who stated that it was removed. I received one of his newsletters and it stated that he was going to Chicago and was not advertising. I would hope that this was not only for free advertising in this forum.

Michael intended to advertise for his trip to Chicago, but having recently bought a home he missed the advertising deadline due to all the hubub surrounding closing and moving.

You'll notice he doesn't mention his trip to Chicago anywhere in this thread, nor does he ever use this board as free advertising for his other constant travel to cities all over the US.

Why do you keep trying to read something sinister into his intentions, or cast aspersions on this really great guy? As Barry asked you earlier, what's your agenda?
