+ ApexNomad Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Spoiler Alert: New Superman Review (James Gunn version) I went in with high expectations… maybe too high. The film jumps straight into the action—no origin story, no buildup. Clark is already Superman, already living on Earth. All of that is explained through a somewhat clunky series of title cards in the opening. The movie leans hard into Guardians of the Galaxy-style humor, which felt out of place for the tone. Some jokes land. Most don’t. Not surprised given Gunn wrote and directed those movies. I didn’t feel it worked here. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan share decent chemistry, but Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor never gave me a reason to believe Superman was in any real danger. He came off more petulant than menacing, and his arc didn’t build to anything truly memorable. And Nathan Fillion? Completely miscast as Green Lantern. There’s a genuinely sweet moment with Clark’s adoptive parents, and an intriguing twist involving his Kryptonian lineage that adds something fresh to the mythology. Beyond that, Clark’s inner life is barely explored. For a character caught between two worlds, it all felt surprisingly surface-level. In trying to be everything—funny, epic, emotional—the film ends up being a little bit of nothing. Not terrible, just not iconic.
+ Gar1eth Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I saw it last Tuesday in IMAX. I thought it was ok -definitely not great. Some thoughts off the top of my bald head-- I liked David Corenswet. When I first saw his pictures and compared him to Henry Cavill, I thought he wasn't handsome enough. But he looked quite nice onscreen. It's about time a major American Superhero was played by an American again. I wasn't that impressed by Rachel Brosnahan (Note: I never really watched Mrs. Maisel). I hated the cinematography. It looked all washed out. I would have preferred more saturation. I also disliked the portrayal of the Kents. I read something about the actor playing Pa Kent listening to rural Kansans to pick up their speech patterns. I went with someone from Kansas who said rural Kansans did not sound like that in his experience. In the comics from the 1950s to 1960s Krypto had human or near human intelligence. The Green Lantern constructs looked fake.
+ poolboy48220 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I saw it last night, going in with high expectations 90% based on Krypto the superdog being in the movie. I was a little bit disappointed. Krypto did not disappoint, my friends were all very impressed with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. I think the 1978 Christopher Reeve is still the best. Final post-credits scene with Supergirl was pretty funny. I have watched with much amusement over the past few months as the fans of the Zack Snyder / Henry Cavill Superman absolutely lose their minds criticizing this movie 🤓 + ApexNomad and Rod Hagen 2
Rod Hagen Posted Monday at 02:45 PM Posted Monday at 02:45 PM It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad. It was entertaining. Lois and Superman had a shockingly good chemistry. I'm a bit surprised I went to see it, and I don't regret it.
