Anyone have any information about escorts and street hustlers in Jamaica? I picked up a Jamaican in Puerto Vallarta, on the malecon. Had a great time... and had to look for my tonsils when we were done. I've never been to Jamaica... I know that gay sex is illegal there, but then, it's illegal in a lot of places. I would expect that the scene there is no different than other places in the Caribbean, just harder to find. Any info would be appreciated.

Not only illegal DANGEROUS..they still kill gays there and many hotels will not take 2 males in the same room. The locals are downright antagonistic. I have been to Jamaica 3 times. I love it but I always go chick in toe and I have never even dared to stare too long at a cute bus boy. But masculinity oozes in the culture and the beach is a real lust fest but Jamaica is like a zoo where you look lustily at the animals but do not touch. blu

Jamaica is one of the most homophobic places on the planet (certainly the western hemisphere). It's also one of the more dangerous ones. I cannot advise emphatically enough to avoid getting together with a local unless you have a very good reason to trust him. Just as Puerto Vallarta is extremely gay-friendly (I've been there four times), Jamaica is just the opposite. Although I admit I haven't been there, the reason I haven't is that everyone I've talked to who has didn't like it (except for this one person at work, but she just stays at the guarded resort with her husband). Hiring a street hustler in Jamaica would be about as dangerous as burning a Koran on a busy street in Medina, Saudi Arabia...

LAST EDITED ON May-02-01 AT 11:52AM (EST)[p]Not that you need any more people scaring you shitless, but you may be approached by very sexually aggressive local men and/or women in Jamaica. They'll grab your ass, whisper sweet nothings as they walk by, or say something flirty out loud. Chances are these people aren't just street walkers but people who know and go towards American tourists looking for a "sponsor" to take them home with them. If they make the first move, I'd be really apprehensive.

I was there 8 years ago, and this happened to me and my friends constantly, and I was a 17 year old there on a missionary trip (Don't ask about that back story...), and probably couldn't have looked more like that's what I was there for. (And we were staying in Port Antonio -- not the most touristy of places.) I've heard that it's become even worse over the last 5 years or so, and I'm sure if you're older and even appear to have money the same thing will happen to you.

Of course, on another note, ignoring the local economic and political turmoil, it's a beautiful, fun place. Have a great trip.

LAST EDITED ON May-03-01 AT 02:13AM (EST)[p]Although Jamaica has a bad rep for homophobia (as do most of the English-speaking islands of the Caribbean) it's also by far the largest and there's bound to be stuff going on discreetly. Prowling the web, you may be able to find something on local gay groups, where you might get some tips or introductions. My understanding is that whatever goes on mostly happens at private parties, and you need a local to take you around and introduce you to the scene. You might be able to get info or contacts by logging into the Caribbean chat room on the International Floor at http://www.gay.com. There's also some material to drool over at http://www.rudejam.com, "Jamaica's Erotic Site."

If this all seems like too much trouble, consider other destinations in or near the Caribbean, like the Dominican Republic or Venezuela, which definitely have gay scenes and where you're likely to find the kind of guys you're looking for. (I'm guessing you're into well-endowed men of African descent?) In the Dominican Republic you can find gay life in Santo Domingo (the capital). In Venezuela, besides Caracas you might want to investigate the resorts of Cumaná, Puerto La Cruz or Isla Margarita. (Last year in Madrid at one of the hustler saunas I met a gorgeous, spectacularly hung guy from Margarita. I suspect there was more where he came from.)

Finally, think about going for broke and heading for the ultimate tropical paradise, Brazil, land of endless sun, sand and hot, hot men! I'd definitely suggest a visit to Salvador da Bahia, one of the most African cities in the Americas, and an unforgettable experience. There are a number of saunas with boys (see my semi-world-famous review of Brazilian Saunas in the Escorts Outside USA section of this site). Your tonsils and other parts of your anatomy should come back with long-lasting memories of your vacation. Assuming, of course, you ever bother to come home! Salvador has enormous historical interest and great beaches, too. You'll also find what you're looking for in Rio, but Salvador is a very special experience.

Let us know what you decide and where you go and what you find, and have fun!

Yes, I've been to the Dominican Republic, and had a great time. It's ironic you mention Brazil, as I'm heading there in October, and I downloaded your saunas article; thanks! The most ironic thing is that the day after I posted this question, the Jamaican I met in Puerto Vallarta called me, 16 months after I met him down there. He's back in the states with a renewed work visa, and is working at an eastern resort hotel. Guess where I'm headed in a few weeks? Sometimes I think there IS a god.... anyway, my curiosity about Jamaica had been piqued by him, and since I've been to the DR and to San Juan and Aruba, I thought I'd try Jamaica. But I've been hearing more negative reports off this board as well. And now I seem to recall that there was a boycott of the island by gay groups, because Jamaica refused to permit a gay cruise ship to make a port call in Montego Bay, Anyway, now that my friend has established contact with me, I'll try to "tap the source" directly, in more ways than one, and I'll post anything useful he tells me. Thanks for the postings!

For what it's worth, most guide books on Jamaica will warn you against meeing locals who haven't been introduced to you by reliable people you know. I would not personally trust a chat room. If something bad happens, not only will you get no sympathy, but rather a hostile response. Everybody has to consider his aversion to risk, but unless risking your life is a turn-on for you (and it is for some people), I would suggest extreme caution.

Amen for that. When I went to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, I walked around the streets downtown with some friends. They asked "Wanna meet some Dominican girls?" When we responded "No, thanks!" they asked "How about some Dominican boys?". The Dominicans (and latin culture in general) are much friendlier than the Jamaicans, particularly to gay guys. Of course, I would still be careful (you could still be robbed at a Dominican hustler's place), but, from all I know about Jamaica, I would have to wonder why take the risk of hooking up with local guys there? I have been to 15 Caribbean islands, plan on visiting more, and have no plans to step foot on Jamaica until and unless they change their attitudes there (which may not happen in my lifetime).

Thanks for the kind words about the sauna article, Cigarboyee. I'm glad to know SOMEBODY has read it! :-) There's a definite shortage of information on this site about the Dominican Republic, so how about posting information about it for the Escorts Outside USA section? Same for anyone else who's been there.

Venezuela also is supposed to have quite a scene (Kristen Bjorn's been there, too!). If anyone has doubts, besides Bjorn's films check out the Miss Venezuela contest when it rolls around on your local Univisión channel. Even if you don't speak Spanish, this has to be seen to be believed, and besides Miss Maracay and Miss Carabobo and the rest of the lovelies, there's usually a back-up group of skimpily dressed Venezuelan hunks who can certainly give Brazil a run for its money. (In fact, if I remember right, one year there was a MR. Venezuela contest, too. Some truly gorgeous Caracas cop won. Knowing what cops make there, I'm sure he was supplementing his income somehow!) If anyone has the goods on Venezuela, please share the weatlh here by putting up a post in the Escorts Outside USA section.

LAST EDITED ON May-04-01 AT 06:13AM (EST)[p]Every year, I go on a cruise with a group of childhood friends ... we're over 30 people when you include spouses, significant others, kids, relatives, and friends of friends. This years cruise is stopping at Jamaica. (We were there four cruises ago.) I don't plan on getting off the ship. I haven't felt that unsafe in a long, long time.

I was playing around today on http://www.guystats.com and searched for "Colombia" and "Venezuela." Check it out! There are photos of a huge-dicked dude in Puerto La Cruz (Venezuela) under "Hard Adventure." A guy named Hans on the Colombia list has a picture that'll definitely require a hit on the old poppers to get your heart going again (assuming it's really his picture!). There's talent all around the Caribbean basin!
