On Rentmen, what do you consider the difference to be when guys label themselves as “defined” vs “athletic?” And how muscular should one really be to label themselves as such? How average is average?

Ive hired a few “Defined” guys who were definitely a bit “doughy” so maybe my personal calibration is a bit off.

Likewise I’ve hired some “muscular” guys who had abs in photos that were generally lacking in real life. Sometimes I can grant a flyer to that (it’s hard to stay shredded year round) but sometimes I’m really in to mood to feel some washboard.

What are your standards for these categories, if you have any?

I think "defined" would be a six (or more)-pack, washboard abs, while "athletic" allows for more leeway. I'd expect that an athletic swimmer would have more visible abs compared to a rugby player, yet both would be considered athletic. Body composition does change depending on a variety of factors, so someone's abs could look pretty different at different times of the day.

"Muscular" is all in the eyes of the beholder, and allows for a lot of interpretation. A bodybuilder looks much different than a CrossFiter, but both are muscular.

A provider's self description could be skewed by an intentionally exaggeration of their physique (overselling). Or they might have some body dysmorphia, so they undersell their physique.

I kind of notice twinks will list defined quite often. They have abs but that's mainly from just being skinny. No muscle really on them anywhere. Athletic would be then the twinks or guys who have some more muscle to them like when they flex the arms for instance. Muscular to me is guys who don't even need to flex to see that they are pretty well jacked.
