"Secret Love" - 1953 Academy Award winner - meaning?

the song has a great moody melody and was famously sung by Doris Day for "Calamity Jane"......it won Best Song at the 1953 Oscars and ranked very high on the charts and all that stuff that year.......but, not being much into symbolism and subtle hidden meanings, the lyrics have always puzzled me.......linked below is an article on the song by "Out" magazine in which they attempt to suggest (as is their job, I guess) the whole Calamity Jane/Secret Love thing is a subtle lesbian metaphor......whatever, I say, but can anybody explain what the lyrics are saying?......is her secret love a real person?.....or what is "in her heart"?......what does she shout from the highest hill??.......thanks for any comment.....

"Secret Love"
(from "Calamity Jane" soundtrack)

Once I had a secret love
That lived within the heart of me
All too soon my secret love
Became impatient to be free

So I told a friendly star
The way that dreamers often do
Just how wonderful you are
And why I'm so in love with you

Now I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

[Instrumental Interlude]

Now I shout it from the highest hills
Even told the golden daffodils
At last my heart's an open door
And my secret love's no secret anymore

I remember the film and the song, and I'm not seeing or recalling the lesbian implication.  In fairness, it is not uncommon for me to not see subtleties.
