I have a ticket for Saturday, May 11, evening performance. It looks visually stunning and all the artists get fine reviews. I’m looking forward to seeing it

I saw John Adam's "Nixon in China" and I enjoyed it; I know nothing about El Nino.  I would have to define myself as (mostly) an old fuddy-duddy since my preference is bel canto rarities.

Holy crap, was it really that barren in the audience? It looks like the pic was taken during the production. 

Granted I’m not a Met regular, but I’ve never seen it so sparsely attended.

The opera hadn’t started. They were adjusting the set before it started. By the time the curtain rose it was a full house, at least in the orchestra where I was sitting. I was impressed how much of the audience was in formal attire. Nice to see some NY audiences still dress up. Makes for an attractive evening.

Were you close enough to see baritone hunk Davóne Tines in all his glory? Was he fully dressed at all times? ☺️

He was dressed like this for much of the opera. He sounds as good as he looks. I’m happy that the days of 300 pound opera singers is changing.

I go to the opera to hear great singing and the fact is large voices are often housed in large bodies.  When an opera singer is attractive, like Franco Corelli or Anna Moffo, it is a plus but I'd happily hear Luciano Pavarotti in La Boheme even though he doesn't look like a starving young bohemian.

Opera is also visual. At one point Pavarotti weighed 396 pounds. He was 71 when he died.
