This headline is so dumb, it got me hot under the collar:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/01/05/california-drought-rain-storm/

California is being inundated with rain. Will it ease the drought?

No, of course not. Rain won't help the drought. How can it? I will note parenthetically that most other news organizations had much more intelligent headlines, such as "How much have recent rains helped California's drought?" and so on. And apparently recent rains have, in fact, significantly eased California's water problems.

I read the article and don't think the headline is "dumb" as you say it is. It appears while the rains have added some water back to the reservoirs and aquifers, it is too early to say these reversals are permanent. Much depends on the next three months before California heads into the dry season.

It points out that last January was also wetter than usual and then by summer the drought was back. And there are huge deficits in both the 200 reservoirs that the state has and in its aquifers.

And not all rainwater is going back into these systems as it is falling so fast that it is washing away down rivers and csusing destruction that will take years to fix. In Santa Cruz they are saying five years.

So the question posed by the headline makes sense.
