The qualification rounds are now over and the teams to meet in Qatar in November are decided, now let the tournament begin.

AUSTRALIA DEFEATS PERÚ 5-4 ON PENALTIES

Australia has qualified the hard way finishing third in one of the two Asian qualification groups. We had to defeat the third place getter in the other group, the UAE [2-1 last week], and then the 5th place South American team, both games played in Qatar. That was Perú.

I lied, qualification is not finished. In the final game, Aotearoa/NZ play Costa Rica in the CONCACAF/Oceania intercontinental playoff tonight.

Before the national team matches in June, three World Cup berths remained in the drawing. Ukraine, Scotland, and Wales played in the European knockout stages. The Ukrainians beat the Scots in the semi-finals, but lost to the Welsh in the finals. Gareth Bale and his team will appear at the 2022 World Cup.

The representative of South America, Peru team met with the winner of the pair of Asian joints Australia - UAE. Curiously, the matches of these teams were hosted by Qatar. The Australians outplayed the UAE (2-1) and advanced to the finals.
