Anyone see the film

Sorry if this has been discussed here before, but I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the documentary "101 Rent Boys" that came out (I think) about a year ago. I was thinking of picking up a DVD copy of ther film and was curious if people here had seen it and what their reactions were to it.

There was another thread about the movie some months back. You can probably locate it by searching the archives in the Lounge.

 

In spite of luke warm reviews here, I went ahead and bought a copy. I can't say that I was disappointed, but the guys in the film just don't measure up to most of the guys reviewed here. They are truly rentboys who have yet to learn to art of escorting. Unfortunately, few of them are even moderately attractive and very few of them seem to enjoy what they are doing.

 

They reminded me of the guys you could pick up on the street pre-AIDS. However, they are a cut above the drugged-out street hustlers of today.

I saw the film at a gay film festival in Cape Town. I agree with Losgatan. The guys featured in no way match what I've experienced with guys I've met through this site.

 

My advice would be to NOT buy the DVD and save your money for something (or someone) else.

Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey are very good filmmakers, they were also behind the Tammy Faye Baker movie, the Real Ellen Story, Rupaul's tv show and other projects, but this was nowhere near their better work. It was amusing to watch but I would have no desire to own it, much less on a high quality format like DVD.
