I have arranged for my first ever trip to Rio this November. I will be there a short 4 nights (All i could arrange for this trip, due to work). The good part is that my birthday is during those four days, so hopefully I will have some nice "presents" to unwrap..Other than the saunas, who has some sights or activities that a first-timer MUST see or do? I will be staying at the Atlantico Cocacabana. I will arrive on Thurs Nov 13 and leave on Mon Nov 17. Thanks for any and all input..

I agree with Lucky.

This MC has a forum full of suggestions. Change your settings to include all topics instead of just the last two weeks. In addition to the Forum Faqs, I have posted two or three daily journals from my first three trips to RIO beginning October 5 years ago.

Here is the first thread:

November is my favorite time to travel to Rio. It is their spring and the weather is usually favorable although the last two years it has rained a lot then.

Have a great trip. It is almost impossible not to have a great trip in Rio.

Been there twice. Of course see Sugar Loaf and Corcovado(Christ of the Andes). Other ideas like people watch on the beaches(A lot of eye candy) and tour to old royal summer palace outside Rio. If you are in buying mood, many of the clothes and other things sold in Rio are made in the city where the old royal palace is located at much cheaper prices. Hope you enjoy.

Was there last year. Two things off the top of my head: the gay beach in front of the Copacabana Palace (look for the rainbow flag) and the newest sauna Caracalla, which I hope hasn't closed already.

I'll send you some information later regarding your request. Although I DO NOT consider myself to be an authority, I do have something to share after being in this country and in Rio for 7Xs in six years, the last being in November 2007.

Also, there is so much at this site as well as at http://www.gaytravelbrazil.com. Hun, it is time to begin reading and thinking!

Ahhhhhhhh.... a virgin.......

You need to go onto netgay.com.br to get the address to all saunas - 117, 202, caracalla, meui mundo. For disco, Le boy, the week (on Saturday) are the must see. Le boy is good on Sunday. dont fall in love with any boys and watch out...they are after your money. You will need to go to Ipanema gay beach right infront of Le farme. Be careful about boys at the beach ...some will create troubles. Saunas have plenty of boys. have fun there. You will have so much fun... you can't stop grinning. You would be so tired from too much... you know what I mean... you dont even have time to go sight seeing.

EMail me if you want to know further details.... Have fun....

November is good month to go.

It's a wonderful city and you will have a great time. My advice: get a guide with a car to take you around, especially to distant places like Corcovado. It's not expensive and worth the $ to save time. We contacted the gay travel agent mentioned on the list here, under South American travels. I think his name was Osvaldo, or Carlo, I can look it up if you want.

He arranged for the car and driver. I also used this guy to be my guide to the baths. He was really nice and took me there, sort of showed me the "ropes" so to speak. One of the baths, the most popular one, was in a neighborhood I didn't want to venture into alone at night. So I was glad to have the car and driver. It's not expensive, and it will make it safer.

nov 13 - nov 17? I'll be there at the exact same time! Imagine that!

I agree with the previous posters about the standard sights:

Corcovado

Sugarloaf

downtown

Also, a driver is a great idea. I hav taken the Jeep tour of the Tajuca rainforest twice. It is wonderful. The concierge in your hotel can arrange it.

As to saunas, I would stick to Point 202, right up the street from the Atlântico and 117 (a short, safe walk from the Gloria mêtro station.

BTW, the mêtro is safe and convenient, being just across the street from the Atlântico.

If you don't have a local agent to help with a driver, I use Oswaldo (previously known as Carlo Romano). He speaks English fluently. His phone is 55-21-3415-3126. Email is gtravelbrasil@gmail.com

He can also arrange a car to take you from the airport to the hotel and he has gotten me a good rate at the Atlântico. And, he can do the Jeep tour.

By all means contact Carlo (Oswaldo). I have been using his expertise since 2003 while traveling throughout the country. I've used his guides in Sao Paulo as well as in Salvador (Bahia) and have nothing but high marks for them as well as for my carioca friend.

I've even gone with Carlo to Parti/Paraty, and while there we, along with five others, took two boat trips to enjoy the wonderful water that prevails. Unfortunately, you will not have the time to do this on your first trip.

Specifiy to Carlo that this is your first trip, but in your communicating with him-- write all of your requests in one or two emails, as he does not send a plethora of them for each and every query; he prefers to do it in one or two long e's.

Also, be patient with him; it takes him a while to get back to you because he has other travel requests to accommodate.

In my attaching my message on the initial writer's response-- I applaud him for the suggestion (since I forgot), and I agree with him.

Take in the culture as well as the sexual component, and, by all means, let your big head guide you more than the smaller of the two. One can become quite overwhelmed by seeing all of the beautiful men (straight- bi- gay- other) who live there!

(I'll write you later, either here or privately with more specifics before too long, but you are definitely doing the right thing by planning now instead of later.)

That last reference is the agent, that put me in a moldy broken down apartment in Rio at too high of a rental fee. No longer on my list!

There is no doubt, for a ride to your hotel, you can do better just using one of the official Transportation desks as you come out of customs!

Carlo/Oswaldo did well by me with the driver and so forth, but I told him the hotel I wanted, which was the Ipanema Plaza. I recommend it. More expensive that the Atlantico, but not outrageous. And Ipanema is a more pleasant neighborhood than Copa imo. The hotel is half a block from the gay beach too. But as another poster said, have your fun with the boys at the BATHS, not on the beach or elsewhere. The Bath owners don't want any trouble, so they don't let any "boys" in who rob, mug, or any of that. You bargain with them for their services, and all is well. No mess, no fuss. It's great. Do NOT cruise the streets, there's just no reason to with all that male pulchritude waiting safely at the baths.

My experience with Carlo/Oswaldo has been hit and miss.

He set up my first trip and everything was fine.

His handling of my last trip in November left something to be desired. I got very ill and had to return on short notice. I left several messages for him but didn't hear back for a week. If I had to put it on one thing I would say his follow-up is not always the best. Last November it took so long for him to respond, that it was too late by the time he did. He did finally make good on the financial issues, but it was something I would have rather not had to worry about.

Hey Pierrot, I had great time at the Ipanema Plaza`where I stayed with Danilo. WE enjoyed watching eye-candy on the beach. We met an Aussie TV actor on British TV who had a`condo in Rio. He is quite a`swimmer and, from the buldge in his swim suit, hung like a horse.

We also liked the many restaurants nearby and the many shops on the street just one block away. Also enoyed some time at the roof-top pool and fitness room. A really great location.

There are so many things to do in Rio (outside the saunas, of course).

Just a few things on my mind:

- you can take a helicopter tour from the Sugar Loaf

- a guided tour in the 'favelas'

- a speed boat ride out of the Marina

- and if you're into high-sensations or extreme sports you can try hang gliding just south of Leblon.

Here is a little 'avant-goût' ...

Enjoy Rio !

At http://www.netgay.com.br, there are about eight escort sites and a few independents in Rio. You might want this experience; I hired from a now defunct escort agency during my first trip, and it turned out to be all right. The fee was reasonable. The guy was quite stellar with his sexual prowess and expertise.

I hired an independent guy who is currently in Europe; his name is Derrick, and he gave the most fantastic time in my hotel room. Since Ingles was not his language or Italian or Portugese mine, a friend of his made the arrangements.

Derrick showed up on time and gave me the time of my life. In looking back I'm sorry that I did not see him again before I left. The guy was sizzzzzzzzzzzling in the sex department as well as being quite personable and sincere. :9

Although Axiom had a good experience, there is no guarantee that independents will be great. There is also the chance of trouble.

I recommend only the saunas. If one doesn't work out, spend another 35 bucks and try another. Just being in the main room of a sauna with 25 hot Brazilians is a total turn on for me. Some of them are erect, lots of them flirt. You are safe there as long as you keep everything of value locked in your locker.

I feel like a kid in a candy shop at the saunas.

Traveler, these recommendations get better and better and trigger in me what I should have initially presented and shared! :-) Muito obrigado, man!

Yes, Danilo, does travel to Rio to become a guide for prospective clients. Although he was a superb guide for me in his home city (Sao Paulo), he served as a guide to a good friend of mine while my friend was in Rio. Danilo stayed in the same hotel room with my friend, but he was in the small foyer in this Atlantico's room where there is a platform day bed of sorts. Danilo guided him to the cultural hot spots as well as to the saunas, and my friend was more than pleased in the end.

I believe the client pays for everything in terms of travel, lodging, food, and guiding!

If I were you, I would contact Danilo. (At age 18 he was my guide while I spent 10 days in Sao Paulo, and he displayed NOTHING but professionalism. Since I was in in city, I merely paid his half day or daily fee along with dining. In Sao Paulo Danilo has excellent transportation, but while you'll be in Rio, plan to use taxis and the metro and perhaps at times good buses. Experience all modes of transportation if you're with Danilo.

If you feel you must contact an individual directly, you might want to contact Barr directly from this site. I haven't gotten his permission for you to do this, but in my knowing him, he will feel flattered that I made this suggestion as this is the first time that I have done this! A succintly written email is all that it will take! :-)

Although you have almost three months before your trip happens, I'd like to recommend this site for you and others: http://www.riogayguide.com and read extensively. It's quite worthwhile as well as valuable.

I used this information for my first visits to Rio de janeiro; I also have booked and taken three wonderful tours which I arranged at this website, but within a few weeks I shall send you a private email with my suggestions for your week's adventures! :-)
