What the heck is going on in my hood?! This is about 3 blocks from my apartment and on my way to my old job another 2 blocks or less :O My neighborhood is usually a pretty quiet area despite having a large community college down the road as well as Seattle Uni in the area as well. *sigh* I hope they catch who done this soon. Kind of makes me uneasy since I don't usually get off work till midnight or 1am.

I have a police/fire scanner from Radio Shack. If you really want to find out about your "quiet" neighborhood get one of these.Find the frequency for your local precinct and fire department and you'll get quite an eye opener.

>Well, at least it'll keep your rent low.

I would prefer my rent be lowered because the owner of building has a heart, not because it was due to the loss of someones life. Sorry but that was a pretty unthoughtful and heartless comment.

I recently bought a condo in a San Diego neighborhood that is perennially up-and-coming. I moved back after a three-year absence because I like the area and wanted to invest in the community. There have been several late-night muggings near the local restaurant and bar district and in early December a man working at a variety store was shot and killed on a Sunday afternoon down the street from me. I was pretty rattled and questioned my decision to move back to the community until I watched the 11:00 news that night. After the story about the killing that occurred in my neighborhood was one about a man who was found shot dead in a parking lot in a toney section of town. The moral of the story is that violence can happen anywhere. Try not to get too freaked out and be careful.

Orlando already has 4 or 5 murders for the year and not even half way thru January. Seems like crime is going up everywhere...I think it tends to be that way when the whole country is uneasy about economy and the general unhappiness with the way things are going here.

Violent crime was down, nationally, last year, with a few exceptions like San Francisco. It's always freaky when stuff like this happens nearby, but those crime statistics come from somewhere and violent crimes usually aren't random (except on tv). There also always seems to be weirder stuff around the holidays. It probably doesn't hurt to be cautious, but people being present on their streets is what keeps neighborhoods safe. I've spent most of my adult life in urban neighborhoods (DC x 2, Chicago, Atlanta), with little problem (a break-in in Chicago that I think was an inside job via an appliance store and some petty theft in Atlanta), so I'm sometimes surprised I haven't seen more.
