Meaning of 411 sorry dumb question

411 is the number for local directory assistance. So it's slang for "information please." It's not a dumb question, nobody calls directory assistance anymore!

Plus not everyone is from the US, and not all countries would use that code.

I'm an almost-sixtysomething and 411 is just ingrained in my mind and my fingers. But fully agree that this shorthand isn't that necessary and can be misleading. I'll do my best to change... :)

My 20 year old assistant recently handed me the phone and said every time I call this number it makes this weird sound. I think it’s broken. It was a busy signal. She made it to 20 without ever hearing one and didn’t know what it was. There are no dumb questions!

Yeah - having just hit 60, it never occurred to me until reading this thread that people who didn't grow up with land lines would never have called 411. I think if you called 511 a recording would tell you what number you were calling from; I saw a phone installation guy do that once.
