Madonna and John Mellencamp will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, alongside Leonard Cohen, the Ventures and the Dave Clark Five. Philly Soul songwriter/producer team Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff will be presented the Ahmet Ertegun Award (previously known as the non-performer category) and blues harmonica player Little Walter will be inducted in the sideman category.

This is Madonna's first year of eligibility; her debut single, "Everybody," was released twenty-five years ago in 1982. The induction ceremony will take place on March 10th, 2008 at New York's Waldorf Astoria.

Among the artists who were nominated this year but did not get in are the Beastie Boys (who were eligible for the first time) and Donna Summer.

That is so cool! Does this mean she's going to start doing rock and roll now? :+

Seriously, while I do think others like Melanie and Connie Francis should get in first, I am a Madonna fan and think this is great. My favorite Madonna song, btw, is "Mother and Father" from American Life.

She rocks out. She did a little bit of it on her last tour during Ray of Light and I Love NY. She just does it on her own terms and her own style, which is why I think she has lasted this long in the biz and why she is the perfect nominee for this honor. She hasn't always done pop.

>I think Donna Summer should have gotten in over The Dave

>Clark Five and The Ventures. She was much more influential in

>she has sold more records than those 2 groups combined!!

>Donna Rocks!!

I would have to disagree with you. I have a hard time supporting someone who has gone on record condemning homosexuality.

That aside her music was less constructed and more manufactured than the other two bands you mentioned.

I think I remember this either being an urban myth or her words being taken out of context.

I Googled because I had remembered it as fact -- but maybe it is an urban myth -- but it sure got a lot of gay press over several years.

An Advocate article provides details of the dispute -- http://www.donna-tribute.com/articles/80/advocate2.htm

The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_summer) seems like a good summary:

A more painful incident came in the early 1980s with reports that she had made anti-gay remarks associated with the AIDS epidemic by suggessting that Aids was a divine punishment from God . Her songs were banned for a number of years in some gay establishments over these rumors. Summer has long denied such allegations, and finally took legal action against a newspaper which printed the rumors during a review of a concert. Summer tearfully stated, "I never said anything that was written about me in that article". To make amends, Summer has since played for AIDS benefits and has donated proceeds to AIDS research. As recently as 2006, she was asked about the rumors by a Canadian newspaper. "So many people in my audiences are gay. I can’t live my life trying to assure people of anything. You have to live knowing who you are. I think that my actions and the person that I am speak louder than somebody else’s misgivings or lies about me", Summer responded. "They print all kinds of things about people all the time but you can’t run after every single lie. You tell people the truth and if they choose to believe you, they do."
