How common is it to be irritated by some gum chewers?

What if you were sitting next to someone on an airplane flight? Do you think you could go through the whole flight with someone cracking his gum next to you? I think I'd go raving mad.

 

Happily I practically never fly, but no, I couldn't get through a whole flight like that. I guess it would depend on the person. If he or she seemed like someone reasonable, I might explain my aversion to gum cracking; otherwise, I'd ask an attendant for a change of seat.

I rarely encounter it. Chewing tobacco, on the other hand, is utterly repulsive. I had a Client who did it.

I have Misophonia. It bothers the hell out of me when people eat with their mouths open, crunch on ice in the theater, breath heavily, make whistling noises when they breath, smack their chewing gum, etc. Fortunately, I have never had any issues with any escorts. I remember seeing Mary Poppins at the New Amsterdam Theater and at the beginning of the show there was a child bout 4 rows in back of me eating pop corn out of a bag and making considerable noise with the bag. I thought it would be over in a few minutes, but it lasted the entire show. You try your best to ignore it, but with Misphonia that's hard to do.

Misophonia…..besides myself I've only known two other people who have it, or at least have the symptoms.

I'm not irritated by people who quietly chew gum. I often chew gum after a meal or when my mouth feels un-fresh but there is no toothbrush/toothpaste or mouthwash available. However, cracking gum, chewing with one's mouth open, and/or chewing loudly is simply annoying. The offending party should be forced to listen to Lawrence Welk Meets The Clash over and over again.
