Apple and AT&T may be causing a shift in how consumers look at a cell phone.

Look at iPod history. in 3/2002 the 5GB iPod went for $400 and the 10GB went for $500. Yes, in 7/2002 they went to $300 and $400 respectively, adding a 20GB iPod for $500. In 4/2003 they announced 10, 15, and 30GB iPods (don't have their pricing). In 7/2004 they announced a 20GB model at $300 and a 40GB model at $400. The next updates were not announced till 10/2005, a 30GB at $300 and a 60GB at $400. It wasn't till 9/2006 that we saw the next price drop, the 30GB to $250 and the 60GB to to $349.

My theory is that Apple nows know the iPod market, and perhaps based on this the iPhone market. In particular that they made AT&T sign a pact with the "devil" (aka, Apple) for five years. The best we can hope IMO the next 6 to 12 months is a drop in price of the iPhone to between $350 and $450 with maybe some add features.

To a point, yes.

When the iPod was released it wasn't necessarily *better* than the huge number of MP3 players already on the market. I had a player from Creative that had all the features of iPod at half the price, and triple the storage, but the software was cranky and difficult to use. Apple made it *easy*, hip, and cool. People were willing to put up with the non-replaceable batteries with alarmingly short lifespans because it was easy, hip, and cool.

And they added easy software (iTunes) with an integrated online store that nobody else had at the time.

With iPhone, I don't see them bringing much new to the market. But it will be considered easy, hip and cool.

The difference is that music players were not ubiquitous when iPod launched. The last dominant player in the portable music arena was Sony Walkman.

Cell phones, on the other hand, are EVERYWHERE. My mother does not have an iPod, but she does have a cell phone with specific preferences about what it will and won't do.

It's going to be a tough market to crack, even with easy, hip, and cool going on.

I have to say that my Treo 600 was pretty durable. It was dropped, kicked, etc and continued to work just fine. I now have a MotoRazr that I have dropped on the sidewalk and sat on and it also works. Note that the case has become a little chipped, but I think that is to be expected.
