This is a bit of a weird post, but if you do not ask you'll never know. I just graduated from grad school. I grew up in southern Connecticut and frequented the city in undergrad. Anyway, I will be moving to the city in the next few months and I want some interesting friends, not boring friends like the Wall Street types. I am looking for, strangely enough, people involved with the club scene and leather scene and, well, people who escort. I find people in these scenes to be much easier to connect with and chill. I heard a while back that a lot of escorts live in Hell's kitchen/the Midtown West area. If I am looking to connect with these people where should I be looking to move to and hang out?

There is the highest concentration of escorts, club queens, etc. living in Hell’s Kitchen. Leather scene is a bit older and smaller. You’ll find more of this demographic in Chelsea. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Is a 32-year-old too old for the club scene?

Of course not. But I hate to disappoint, there’s no longer much of a club scene in Manhattan. All of the major venues have closed due to rising rent or have been demolished. There are a plethora of bars in HK, making it easy to bar hop on any given night but if you actually want to indulge in the club scene, much of it has migrated to Brooklyn or you have to wait for a major dance event to roll around once or twice month in Manhattan. There is no actual dance club. New York has changed.

I am not disappointed. The club scene was not much of a fun scene for the last 10 years. I am looking for more of a lounge, bar and restaurant type feel to it. Honestly, I am just looking for a way to socialize without the use of an app like Grindr or Jack'd. I feel like there are not any other ways excluding bar hopping.

I cried when La Nueva Escuelita closed. A Latin-flavored LGBT dance club where party hosts Angel Sheridan and Harmonica Sunbeam would make tips in between turning tricks ... And a hangout place for many latin and black rentboys. You may have liked it:

In all seriousness, do you have hobbies or interests besides escorts, BDSM and clubs? Do you like hiking in nature? Do you play bridge? Do you crochet? Join a club that caters to people with the same interest. It's a great way to meet people when you are new in NYC.

Perfect. Spring is rolling around so you see a lot of rooftop parties at Le Bain in meatpacking and hotels/restaurants sprinkled throughout the city. And Hudson Yards opens this week which I’m sure will host a gay social somewhere in that neighborhood. And of course, World Pride this year. I know the social scene in NYC very well, i’ll slide you my social media in a DM.

This thread is fascinating to me. I grew up in the Manhattan gay scene from the days of the dance bars like the Cherry Lane through the days of the sex clubs like the Mineshaft. I lived in Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen when they were straight neighborhoods. I haven't lived there in 35 years, and I haven't even been back to visit in ten years. It sounds as though if I were to return today, I would be as lost and clueless as I was when I arrived sixty years ago.

Nearly all of the gay bars in Chelsea have closed, with the exception of the Eagle, Gym Sports Bar, ReBar (newer) and Barracuda.

The village still hosts some historic gems and dives but many have closed.

Hell’s Kitchen is the only thriving gay community.

There is no designated gay dance club, there are no sex clubs.

I will definitely try to make friends around my interests. Believe me, I will use all the options available to me.

Oh, btw I went to Escuelita quite a few times when I was between the ages of 18-23. I knew the scene there. Nowhere near as well as you though.
