Some people think they are useless, others see them as a way to change things in their lives. While I think of myself as a pretty determined person, I have never found New Year's Resolutions to be worth anything. This year though, I have made two resolutions.

#1 To start writing that book everyone tells me I ought to write and which I have written parts of in my mind for years. (By the way any thoughts on my opening sentences: "Hey!! Stop peeing on my foot" I yelled while jumping away from the non-descript man at the urinal next to me. He stared ahead aimlessly. If I knew where this encounter was going to lead me, I would have just taken my soggy shoed self out of there and would have never looked back, in anger or with any other emotion." )

#2 To start listening more, rather than waiting for my turn to say something. When I manage this, I find that I learn more and get less of that "gee that sounded funny in my head before I said it" feeling.

So guys. New Year's resolutions. Do you make them? Do you break them? Are they just a waste of time? If you do make them, what did you resolve for 2007?

I had that resolution a few years back. It can be life changing, not just internally for you but the way people perceive you. Some of my friends thought I was depressed because I had become so quiet. Some at work have noted I am no longer as aggressive (I think they meant rude & mean) as I once was. New people often get an impression of me that I am shy (I am not). There are some people at work I still cut short - but only when I know I have limited time and they have a history of being too verbose. But overall I really think I have greatly improved my listening skills and also as important, picking up on the things not being said. Good luck with this one, and watch to see how others change in their perception of you. :)
