This morning, as I checked the news and e-mails before moving on to the main course (The Reviews), I read unbelievingly an e-mail to HooBoy from "Paul", critiquing his choice of music on a recent tape he and his sister made for their mom. It struck me as somewhat insensitive and thoughtless when we all are privy to the emotional rollercoaster our fearless leader has been on these past weeks. The logical me knows it wasn't meant to wound, but I'll bet it did! That whole "song-tape-mother-sister" thing wasn't about the calibre of the song, it was about LOVE of the best kind, and the timing of this e-mail struck me as being just a bit misguided. I can see the time approaching when HooBoy will share none of his life with us, and that will be a shame, because it adds a certain human touch to this site. I have no doubt "Paul" never meant it to be hurtful, but I think it was, and that's a darn shame.

Torjon;

You are correct. I am insensitive and thoughtless. I did not intend to hurt HooBoy, I was just commenting on the music. We have had this side conversation about teen pop music before.

The tape he made for his sister and and mother was very thoughtful of him, and wonderful if they love it as much he says. I should have kept my comments on the music to myself.

The music comments were taken out of a much longer e-mail about many other issues. I am not sure why HooBoy only printed that part of the e-mail, or any part of it, for that matter.

But in this case, I am guilty of being insensitive and thoughtless, and I will attempt to exercise more restraint in the future.

LAST EDITED ON May-28-00 AT 06:19PM (EST)[p]Perhaps. But this goes both ways. I truly sympathise with Hooboy's family difficulties. These things happen to us all and they are never easy and never pleasant.

But it seems to me that Hooboy also wields his "look what I got in my email" power a little too much for my taste and he seems at times to post something with the intended purpose of embarassing the sender. This is such a case in point.

Perhaps he does it to prevent receiving more email; I don't know. But it certainly works with me for I will not email him.

I think private email should be just that -- private. The excerpt he extracted from your note, which you indicate contained other subjects as well, had nothing to do with this board and should not have been made public. This is exactly the same as if I took the email I got from other posters, extracted tidbits that amused or angered me, and then posted them here.

Oh, but this is Hooboy's site, you say. And yes it is. But purposely embarassing another person is seldom appropriate. And private emails should be answered privately.

To me, this is just one more side of the privacy issue that I've brought up here at other times (perhaps to the dismay of the other readers).

LAST EDITED ON May-30-00 AT 01:20PM (EST)[p]I did not reveal who the email was from. I only identified him as "Paul" There could be a million "Pauls" and it could have been an alias to top that. Unless asked otherwise or unless it's an escort, I always make up the names or initials for the email author. How in the hell can I be using that section to embarrass people when they are not identified?

I started that email link prior to having this forum and it gave me the opportunity to share with you a small portion of the email I get because I found much of it fascinating and it gave me a shameless way to plug this site and also to publish things I find humorous or strange.

Why did I post that portion of the email in question? Because I opened my heart and life up to you and I thought it was an interesting follow-up.

Incidentally, prior to getting that email, I deleted all reference to my family, my sister, the song and anything personal.

The other portions of the email that were not published were constructive criticisms of the site. One I already had corrected and the other I reacted immediately to.

The writer also gave me permission to publish it. I get a lot of email from people who say upfront to NOT publish and I have never betrayed their trust.

And I did write him personally before that was even published and responded to every point he made. I also thanked him for writing to me. I respect him and like him and I regret he chose to identify himself here. Otherwise, you would never have known who it was.

If I eliminate the Email section you won't get to see what Toby in Pittsburgh or or that guy in California have to say about themselves and you.

Then, of course, you don't have click on the Email tab and suffer through my choice of power-brokerage as Boston Guy likes to put it.

So, as Steve Martin used to say....EXCUUUUUUSSSEEE ME!

Well said Hooboy. I've never seen anything indiscreet in your email excerpts. Just interesting clipits from fans and foes, as well as amusing requests from escorts like "could you please delete reviews #4 and 7?"!!

No, he doesn't NEED to update readers on select aspects of his personal life through either the news or email section. God (and HOOBOY) knows he is exposing himself to the cruel by being so open. But the upside for him is that he receives a few kind words in response. And it certainly makes this site more personal and less like the Consumer'sDigestofHookers.com

Keep it up.
