Tom may be in the closet, but he's out the door at Universal.

What may never come out in this story is the part homophobia perhaps played in all of this. Did Cruise's alleged fear of being outed lead to his behavior on Oprah and his preening around town with Katie? Is there a gay angle in the Scientology part of the story? Closet queen John Travolta is also involved with Scientology and there are rumors, perhaps unfounded, that Cruise is romantically involved with some man at Scientology.

However ricidiculous, however plausible these tales, I wish some keen, aggressive, objective reporter could explore exhaustively this part of the story. If homophobia played even a part in this career, exposing it would be so instructive.

Cruise's antics and bizarre public behavior may have been prompted to "butch up" his reuputation and protect his career. Even so, he ends up on the sidewalk.

Of course, he's only going from making billions to making millions.

CORRECTION: Cruise is out the door at Paramount.

This morning's (8/23's) Wall St. Journal carries a good front page story on this. At least there appears to be a seismic shift in the power struggles between studios and stars. Perhaps we do need a Louis B. Mayer or a Darryl F. Zanuck to keep stars from getting out of hand.

bottom line, tom's leaving probabally is because the studio can not make money at the high prices he charges for a picture. it's all about making money. he would have gotten a new contract if he took a salary cut.

my own view is that the studios are without morals and would do anything that makes money. they would hire osama bin laden if they thought putting him in pictures would generate profits.

the salaries paid by the entertainment industry are outrageous; but, if the stars can get millions for a little work then bless their hearts. it is all about supply and demand. the demand for tom cruise pictures is dropping so the price of his services does as well.

You're quite right. And the reason the studio can't make their profit margins using Tommy-O at his prices is because fewer and fewer people are going to see his films, due entirely to his nut-case antics last year. And therefore he has only himself to blame.

Too bad really - 'cause he is still one cute little lump of flesh.

Something I always wondered - remember that scene of his in Top Gun where he was shaving at the sink wearing only his very tight jockey shorts and showing a great view of that great butt of his? - can't figure out why that pic has not circulated on the net. I would have thought that would have been a natural.

That's part of it, for sure, but not all of it. His box office was dropping even before he went wacko. It is not unusual for stars to lose box office lustre as they grow older.

When the only scripts you can carry are "See Tom, See Tom Run, See Tom Outrun Big Explosion" your shelf life is severely limited.

And of course there are other, broader, issues facing the entire industry.

Movies are more expensive to make these days, and they're more expensive to see too. Audiences have alternatives like pay-per-view via cable providers and even online viewing. The whole industry is shifting, and getting rid of major expenses is one way for a business to get nimble enough to survive major shifts.

It does boil down to one thing though: "Show me the money!" ;-)

With his net worth, I'm sure Cruise can survive being laid off.

You can glimpse his peeper in BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY and a nice quick glimpse of its head in some early film he made about a high school football player -- title of this forgettable one slips away. His first wife, Mimi Rogers, said they had sex twice during their marriage because Tom was very protective of his instrument. Not gossip. I read the quote in a major mag. He must have been getting ready for its close-up.

"All The Right Moves" was the name of the film, it was a small movie made by Lucille Ball's production company -- may have been an offshoot of Desilu. Lucy took her name off the credits (replaced by her husband Gary Morton) when she saw the scenes you mentioned.

Cruise's longest nude scene is as the fifth lead in "Taps." Nice ass.

I am a big fan of the Hollywood gossip site http://www.defamer.com. Here are a few links to that site with some very good background on the whole situation. Actually, this site and http://www.gawker.com offer some really clever writing poking fun at celebrity.

What many of these stars tend to forget is that when it comes down to it, they are nothing more than employees of major corporations. Image is everything, when the brand is tarnished, and the profit margins decline, they will be tossed aside.

Now that's funny.

Would love to get Nicole Kidman drunk enough for her to spill the beans as to the real reason they split. You could sell that one to the tabloids for enough $$$ to retire on.

they are fueled by his homophobia and 10 million dollar lawsuits

they are pissed of with his Scientology bullshit

they are ready to hurl everytime he is rude to anchors on talk shows

they love to see super-rich assholoes fry

and..... it's fun - "that's entertainment"
