Reminds me of a story I once read in "The Readers Digest". A fellow joins the military. He and other new recruits are standing in line. The sergeant takes out a hand grenade pulls the pin and throws it amid the newbies. They scatter. Of course it was a dud.

 

At lunch the fellow from the morning meets a friend also a new recruit and tells him what happened that morning. So that afternoon it's his turn. When the sergeant throws the grenade the recruit falls on it. He's made corporal.
