...I can't help feeling kinda pathetic. How the hell did someone my age pull together a film this good? I missed it during the two seconds it was in theaters, but watched it this morning on DVD (I also watched the cute NYC section in the 'extras" as well as the making off during which I was blown away by how they filmed the under the ice part (I assumed the "sinking" was computer CGI only))

No, it doesn't offer any "new" insight into Nazism, but it's stunningly well-shot, perfectly acted, and tightly told. Good film by a young director both Bold and confident (doesn't that describe every smart German you've ever known).

RE: Napola

I watched it also on Saturday. Came up in my Netflix queue. I ordered it after it was recommended here a long time ago.

Beautifully shot. Some hot ass shots. That whole scene on the frozen lake was harrowing.

RE: Napola

Let me add my recommendations. Beautifully photographed, directed and acted. Absolutely stunning, on many levels. It's no wonder it took them almost two years to get it to screen.

And, even if you saw it in a theatre, pick up the DVD for the extras. A great "making of" featurette, including how they shot the underwater swimming scenes, and lots of amusing takes of a former German officer teaching the young actors how to goose-step Nazi fashion! There's also an interview (in English, everything else is German with subtitles) with the director and the hottie star, shot when they were in NYC for the US premiere.
