Rendezvious in the Ramble, 1978

A number of guys were gay bashed there that summer. The NYT noted that the gang was looking to beat homosexuals, but protected the victims (including former ice skater Dick Button) by repeating the cover stories they gave to the police. Many of them said they were jogging and had stopped to watch the fireworks.

 

But New York Magazine called it like it was and gave a really interesting description of what the Ramble was like pre-AIDS.

So many fond memories of the Rambles.....

 

The rock outcroppings...

the fallen trees.....

the blankets of snow....

the well worn paths....

the blistering summer heat....

the bird watchers.....

the backwards glances....

the gentle caresses....

the forceful grunts.....

and the occasional lover.
